Bucko 10 #1 Posted May 8, 2019 (edited) Just found a complete Wheel Horse. On the front cover, it has 203...is this the model or its cut measurement? The transmission shift selector is a rod at the console; I can push down and point the needle to reverse, or move the selector and pointer to any of the forward gears. However, no mater what I select, especially N (nuetral), the rear wheels are locked. I cannot see to get it into neutral. On other wheel Horse tractors, it was a simple method of removing the shifter, looking down the opening, and sliding the two forks to get it into neutral. This model however has the gear shifter in the console. Do I have to remove the body to access the top of the transmission, or do I have to drop the rear axle/transmission? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #2 Posted May 8, 2019 203 does not compute. Could it be 208-3? Garry
Bucko 10 #3 Posted May 8, 2019 Got more info...its got 208-4 on the engine cover side, its a 4 speed, its an 8 HP Briggs engine. Model 191707 Type 2530 01 Code A8012010 Its stuck in a gear. I'm guessing one of its forks is stuck, as the shifter, which is built into the dash (below the steering wheel) moves up and down, but does not free up the rear wheels when its pointer is pointing to the neutral position. I tried slightly above and below the "N", but nothing in the way of freeing up the wheels. So, does this rig have an access cover that I can remove and push/slide the internal shift forks(?) to free it up? I could then drain the transmission, fill it with some diesel fuel, rotate the rear wheels while in each gear, drain, repeat, then fill it up with some 90 WT gear oil. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #4 Posted May 8, 2019 Your engine numbers don't match up for the 208-4. 1988 208-4 model 32-08B402 used a 900-029 Peerless transmission. 1989 208-4 model 42-08B401 used a 920-028 Peerless transmission There should be a plate on the transmission with the model number. For the complete transmission service manual I don't think these transmissions use gear oil. There is a lube chart in the service manual. Garry
Bucko 10 #5 Posted May 17, 2019 (edited) Thanks for the Peerless doc for the transmission. In studying it, I can see there are "shift pins" on a shaft within the transmission that pull/push gears into position, via the "shifter fan" that connects via a rod to the shifter on the dash (below the steering wheel).. I can easily move the shifter on the dash to any of its gears; there is no binding. However, the rear wheels are locked in a gear. When I lift the rear up off the ground, one wheel turns forward, the other in the reverse direction. Do I need to spin the input shaft of the transmission perhaps the get this transmission in neutral? The tractor has sat for about two years in a garage. The engine is free (spins). The previous owner stated the tractor ran fine, but engine surged, so he parked it. I believe the engine surge is due to the carb gaskets leaking, drawing in unmetered air. Before I remove/rebuild the carb and replace its gaskets, I want to make sure the transmission is good. I can't move this tractor around with it locked in gear. Its a heavy beast to be sliding it around! Edited May 17, 2019 by Bucko
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #6 Posted May 17, 2019 Turning the driven pulley may help. Try in both directions as that may relieve tension on whatever is locking it. The fact that the rear wheels turn in opposite directions indicates the differential is working as intended. Garry
