Harrows

Last year at the big show I picked up a set of harrows, pull behind cultivators and a potato digger. I finally was able to use my harrows the other day with my 753. I was pleasantly surprised. They seemed to work good. I had a set that was not wheel horse that I tried before and they didnt work at all. Now I just need to find time to move my boat and plow the rest of my garden and harrow it so we can plant. I'm curious what do you use for weight on these?  I had a weight made out of old rail road track kinda balanced in the middle. It worked but slipped off when I lifted it.

Looks to be a little wet ther yet but nice to see working it as should. I use cinder blocks but my soil looks to all together different that what you have going on there. When things are that muddy you just don't  have the moxy to turn things over weĺl.  Any chance you can let things dry out a little? Your implements would work much better.

It has rained 28 out of the last 35 days. I have to work it while I can. More rain coming in a few days this week. The soil is actually way better than it looks in the pictures.

Yeah I hear yah ..water level here is still way above average levels and our soil is a sandy loam if not all sugar sand which allows for good drainage if the rains give us a break. Not much we can do against mother nature tho.

We live in an area with some of the most fertile soil being in the Connecticut river valley. The soil in this pic used to be farm land that my great grandparents and grandfather farmed. It's good soil it just needs to be worked more which is a good excuse for me to play more.

Looks like it did a great job.

Great to have workable soil.

Raised beds Only at my place unless you're farming rocks.

We have a raised garden for veggies closer to the house. This is for our pumpkins and water melons. It's big enough for then to spread out.

We have used logs... or people to weigh down the disc... depending on who’s behind the helm of what tractor!  Somewhere there’s a picture of Rylee when she was 4 or 5 running the Simplicity mower around with me on the disc teaching her left from right, etc.

I raced home from my youngest sons baseball game tonight and fired up the trusty 753. Out to the garden I went. I re plowed it and widened it with the single bottom then I harrowed it. I definitely need more weight but it did fairly well. By the time the tractor ran out of gas I was harrowing by head light.

Before I lost mine to scrap scavengers, I used mine for about everything. It's a great tool to have.

You can use a bag of cement , i would make some kind of wooden/metal box to put the bag in. Menards has something in the cement aisle that has sand/cement mix for like $5.00 a bag , but darned if i can remember the name of it. Or pour your mix in a three gallon or five gallon bucket and let it harden. Found it , look below. Even cheaper than $5.00.

 

Tube sand works well also , the kind you put in your vehicle for weight. Not sure of the cost of the tube sand though. I have a couple of tubes that i put inner tube pieces around them and clamped the ends shut with hose clamps.

Whichever way you decide to mount some weight , i am sure you will have to make something to fasten your load. Maybe get two or three bags and ratchet strap down ??
