clueless 3,012 #1 Posted May 6, 2019 I've got a couple of sets of the 8.5 wide wheels that need painting, don't plan on putting them on anything right now though. Got a guy who does dustless blasting who is going to do a couple of non tractor things for me so I'm going to have them done to. I'm not sure what tractors I may put this on, so not sure what color either will end up being. If I use a etching primer now will I have to sand it when I decide to paint? Can I just hit them with some white Rustolum paint and primer white and then use a scotch brite pad to scuff them when I paint them?
Pullstart 63,201 #2 Posted May 6, 2019 I would imagine if you paint them white, then decide to go with antique or ivory, or black, or red.... just hit the white with a light sand paper (400-600) wet or dry, then paint them again. As long as they don’t have oil or other chemicals on them, they’ll paint up just fine.
Achto 27,913 #3 Posted May 6, 2019 My suggestion would be to spray a coat of self etching primer on them, follow by a coat of two of regular primer. Throw them on the shelf until you need them. When your ready to paint you can give them a good scuff with red Scotch Brite or 400 - 600 grit sand paper and shoot them the color of choice.
953 nut 56,168 #4 Posted May 6, 2019 After sanding and immediately prior to painting anything you should use a clean cloth and paint prep solvent to be sure they don't have any oils or other residue that could prevent good paint adhesion.
lynnmor 7,384 #5 Posted May 6, 2019 Service Tire Truck Centers (Google it) do wheel reconditioning, I don't know if they are show quality, but I do know folks that use them for trailers used in their business and they tell me that the prices are fair, especially if you can wait till they are running your color.
