adsm08 2,214 #1 Posted May 6, 2019 I guess technically this is engine stuff... What have ya'll done for exhaust? The only two things I've found so far that I don't love are the lack of cushion on the seat, and the volume. The K181 seems to be a little loud for my taste, even with ear protection. Now admittedly the muffler may just be shot, but I'd still like to find a way to turn the volume down a bit, I just need to see some examples to get an idea of what works.
WHX?? 49,444 #2 Posted May 6, 2019 Sounds like you need a cub muffler... Tom @Shynon turned me on to them a few years back and they have a mellow tone and look nice.

It's very quiet and and also has a nice deep mellow tone. @WHX22 where do you buy yours? I could use another but I don't want to order a garbage imitation. squonk 41,604 #4 Posted May 6, 2019 Check your ignition timing. I had a 12 horse that was loud as heck and nothing seemed to get it quiet enough. Then I found the timing was way off. It was firing after TDC and the engine was actually laboring. After it was set it was much quieter.
953 nut 56,093 #5 Posted May 6, 2019 A Harley Davidson muffler will give you a deep rich tone. 4

Exactly identical to what I have on Patriot horse already. The reason I ask is because I was wondering if you have had any experiences with some of them being a fair amount louder than others or anything like that. ebinmaine 68,749 #8 Posted May 6, 2019 I know the OP is looking for a muffler for an 8 horse but how much can you put through one of those Cub mufflers? 12? 16?

ebinmaine 68,749 #12 Posted May 11, 2019 @WHX22... I've only bought one so maybe you could answer that.
ET160 29 #13 Posted May 11, 2019 How about this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/MUFFLER-FOR-KOHLER-TECUMSEH-OR-BRIGGS-AND-STRATTON-Inlet-outlet-are-reversible/121200272163
ebinmaine 68,749 #14 Posted May 11, 2019 I can't comment on that one specifically because I've never heard it. The reason that we like the Cub mufflers in particular is because they are very quiet
The Tuul Crib 7,338 #15 Posted May 11, 2019 I just received my cub muffler today and put it on my 14 horse. It was definitely a sweet sound. Ended up paying 20 bucks for it off of eBay.
adsm08 2,214 #16 Posted May 11, 2019 Thanks for the input guys. Hopefully I will have the new pump shaft seal in my hands Monday afternoon, at which point I will get the pump back together and then I can worry about the exhaust. Just gotta come up with the money to do it, this month is gonna end up a little tight despite (or perhaps because of) an extra paycheck.

Randy I think about the only thing I would change on that is maybe to put a 45-degree elbow off the engine so as to get that pipe coming straight out from underneath the hood. Otherwise that looks fantastic!

ET160 29 #23 Posted May 12, 2019 That does look cool. What extensions did you run? Is it just threaded pipe?

It did end up moving it back some which is what I wanted it to do. 2
