Deck wheel hitting the rear tire.. I think I know why, need opinions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

See the chain in the image?  Now look beside it and you see a second bar thingy with holes in it.. Is that sposed to have a chain on it too??:teasing-dunce: I think it should because that might help reel that mower deck in away from the rear tire in the other pick.  Is that how it should work?  :tools-wrench:

That 2nd bar is for the cable that lifts attachments at the rear of the tractor and for the snowthrower or generator mounted at the front

:confusion-confused:          Those nice new tires might be a bit larger than the tires that came on your :wh:. Did you have this problem before?

Pullstart

The chain is on the lifting link, the open link is for pulling a cable forward, essentially lifting rear implements like a plow or tiller.

Is is there any side to side movement?  It seems like on my 502 deck the belt tension adjustment slides the deck forward and backward.  Possibly a shorter belt could allow you to move the deck forward...

This tractor is new to me.  I am inheriting everything from PE with no previous tractor experience.  I was hoping to figure it out b4 I mow.. grass is gettn high and just installed new eng after the tecky cut out every 30 seconds.  A bit of fabrication.  Ok, thanks for the expl on that bar thingy!

pullstart, yes I can move it side to side.  when I pull the front of the deck up, the wheels move away from the tire. BUT its angled as it should be for proper cutting currently. I am wondering of it needs some restoration or bushings or something.  unfortunately and fortunately I will have to really study the manuals to get a clue but (and definitely plan to) but may have to zip tie for now just to get my lawn mowed down. :/

p.s.  Would you be scared if you were that little deck wheel?

Look at the drawing that Garry posted in the deck manual, you will see what is called a "quick attach" mechanism.  The front of your deck goes into the piece.  This is where the deck gets pulled from and the chain just allows you to lift the deck when not mowing.  There should be "fins" that rise up under the frame and inside the frame so the deck follows the horse...they keep the deck from going side to side.  That quick attach will keep the deck in place and away from your rear tires.  :occasion-xmas:

Below is a picture from Karl showing the quick attach on a newer horse.  Yours will look similar  and you can see where the front of your deck fits into that notch.  An arm swings down and locks the deck in place.  A hair pin locks the arm in place.  You need to make sure the deck is in the notch on both sides of the horse.

Did you hit any stumps with it?

Check the mount on the deck to see if it

might be bent.

Ok, I will take a look at the "quick attach" mechanism when I get back.  Thanks. If I recall it is a bit loose there with a GAP.  #scratch-head.  Tool Crib I just bought this mower, I havent even mowed hardly at all , let alone hit a stump unless PO did. :/ Everything looked even to me.  BUT it seems to have a lot of play in it.

I am wondering if the double belts are worn too much or the wrong ones. Item 33 bolt in the parts list is what adjusts the double belt tension and appears to move the mower deck back to tension the belts.

The part number of 33 in the list is 960200-4 and in the instructions it is 160200-4 - paragraph 2 on page 2.

As mentioned by 953, the rear tires might be part of the problem.  Please post the size of those tires to help us confirm or rule them out. Maybe I missed it, but what tractor is this on?

If the new tires are 23’s shouldn’t they be the same size as the old 23’s ?

Sure guys, they are 23" tires, 656.  One of the deck belts is loose as a goose and the other one.. slightly loose.  If I tighten them with my finger, the deck seems to move more toward the tire. :/ BTW as I am mowing heavier grass I noticed the drive belt to the blade slowing down to a near stop too!  But it doesnt feel loose.. but that must be too! Notice the shredded rubber left of pulley and belt!  And wondering if spring in the pic is ok..  Trying to give as much info.. see the grass?  its having hard time cuttin it now.

^those are stones there, not water.

I added some more pics.. almost looks like those spindle things should have a bushing or something but I cant tell if its there or not.  The quick latch is tight only bc I zip tied it or it would have a gap..

Ok, you can toss my statement out the window, I was thinking the deck was older than what you have.

Wait are you saying that second metal thing with the holes actually should attach?  If so that would make sense because I cant understand why the deck leans down and back on the .. dr side.

The hole circled in white is where a hair pin would go to keep the quick attach closed.  These decks (rear discharge) are really not the greatest in long grass.  I sometimes have to raise the deck up and cut and then go back with the deck down.  Another option that works good is to cut the grass while in reverse...you kind of get a mulching action then.  If you are cutting around 2" of grass , you should get an excellent cut.  Of course, the speed of the blades will make a difference.  Underside of deck clean, sharpened blades, greased spindles, tight belts & good oiled pulleys will make a difference.  Your engine should be topped out at about 3600 RPMs also.  You do have the deck attached correctly in the quick attach thingy.  The holes may be wallowed out a little, but that should not make that much difference.

The tires on my deck (same as yours) are 5 1/2" dia. and I have about 2" clearance between the deck wheels and the rear tires.
