mikeeyre74 289 #1 Posted April 29, 2019 I picked up a 416-8 late last year and I’ve only used it with a snowplow blade on it during the winter. I just put the mower deck on and the PTO keeps jumping out, turning itself off while I am mowing. I do not see anything obvious going on here, and it’s not my only wheel horse, I have had plenty of these in the past and have a few right now… I am mystified as to what is going on here? JAinVA 4,620 #2 Posted April 29, 2019 (edited) Sounds like the actuating rod is out of adjustment.Have you tried turning the connecting trunnion to tighten up the linkage?Once engaged the whole system stays engaged because the linkage goes over center keeping pressure on until you pull the pto lever back. Or someone has the take up in wrong side up, or vise a versa. I found and I can't remember if it works better when the take up rod adjustment is down though. Just a thought. mikeeyre74 289 #6 Posted April 30, 2019 It’s not much to look at but... After I wrote that message, I came into the garage and tightened it up one turn on the trunnion. I went back out for a few minutes, and it seemed to hold, but I’m not sure if that was the same amount of time then I was out there before it started disengaging on its own… I did try flipping engagement rod upside down, but it just wouldn’t work at all that way so I put it back on the top. I am familiar with how the mechanism works, sort of like a cam, where it gets tighter as you push the lever forward and then snaps into place as it goes over center. It just doesn’t feel like it’s going over center as much as it needs to, but I don’t see anything that is blocking its way to see it properly where it is? Hacksawhero123 351 #7 Posted April 30, 2019 Pull the outer hub off and make sure that the spring (the one on the end of the shaft that pushes the hub from the clutch plate when disengaged) hasn’t gone to hell and is keeping the hub from getting full traction against the clutch plate. Goldnboy 927 #9 Posted April 30, 2019 You may also want to check the engine drive pulley is not loose. It could be moving in towards the engine when pressure is applied when pto is engaged. I found this out when the po owned on my tractor cut the pto rod to shorten it so more pressure could be applied to compsate for the pulley moving Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

JimmyJam 542 #14 Posted April 30, 2019 Sorry, zooming in from that far away is pretty fuzzy. There should be a hole in PTO engagement rod that the head of a cotter pin accepts a spring to PTO “flag”. This spring keeps things engaged or not. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
