Brake Shaft oil seal problem

Recommended Posts

Alfienoalkes

Hello,

Trying to replace a leaking oil seal on a C121 Can anyone tell me if the oil seal is also the metal ring around the shaft (pictured)  or rubber only, and the metal ring stays in place ,

the gap is so narrow  between rubber and shaft I cant get anything in there strong enough to pull it out ??

   Thanks

.       Alfie

Rubber and metal come out a one piece. Drill a small hole in the metal part and use a bent pick to work it out.

I had a similar leak and replaced the bearing and seal.  I was wondering, though, after looking inside.  If the oil level is too high, it seems that oil will be at the level of the brake shaft.  I wonder if lowering the oil level with the plug would help with leakage.

We have 2 ways to tell if you have too much oil in your trans. The 1st way is if you have a dip stick.  The second way is to open that little fill plug on the left side of your transmission which is back by the rear axle tube.  If oil runs out, there is too much oil...if no oil runs out, there is not enough and you should add oil just until it starts to run out that hole.

To answer your question...sure, if you lower the oil level past that it will probably stop leaking, but you also may be stopping the oil from doing it's lubricating job.  That is not good.  The correct thing to do is fix the problem by replacing the seal...and maybe the bearing if it is bad also.  A bad bearing can also cause a seal to leak.  :orcs-cheers:
