Thanks to the Woodwright shop on PBS. 😀 This is probably easy, but it's raining and I don't want to deal with getting to the good stuff.

formariz 11,974 #410 Posted May 11, 2019 I have seen woodworkers basically throw them away in frustration an disgust. Many try to assemble it around auger. The easy way is to insert it from the back of auger since if it is closely open to auger size it will not fit past spurs. Once in its very easy to adjust and a very effective tool. Tools from that period were absolutely ingenious and clever. Some great minds were around.

I kept looking at the feet that are the stops and thought it had to be a surface to push or pound on.

Funny tidbit: My dad got a B for brass knuckles in shop class in high school that said “Marc” (short for Marcus) on the receiving end* 😂 Edited May 11, 2019 by LengerichKA88 *thats what I was told anyway
LengerichKA88 1,883 #417 Posted May 11, 2019 Almost looks like a bit holder, or a template for pre measured and placed holes. The two outer most holes look like they’re used to secure the piece, but aside from that I’m not sure.
Ed Kennell 37,447 #418 Posted May 11, 2019 Yes, the two outside holes appear to have been peened down to fit alignment pins. The random size and pattern of the 5 holes are confusing. Drill alignment gage for a hinge plate?

I use it mostly to make pegs to pin tenons. The ones peened on one side are for making dowels with glue ridges. 2 2
