8ntruck 7,068 #111 Posted June 6, 2019 Nice job! Gotta ask - does it make lots of black smoke when it is working hard?

So far the only way I can get noticeable smoke is when I throttle up from an idle. I buried a 10" Brinly plow as deep as I could behind it and the engine barley noticed. Even pulling a stone boat didn't seem to make the engine work much. Edited June 6, 2019 by Achto 3 1

I guess your next task/chore/duty is to rig up a secondary injector to produce the "rolling coal" effect......... 1 1

Pullstart 63,055 #115 Posted June 6, 2019 I’ve got all kinds of engines that’ll puff puff.... but my diesels burn clean unless I’m really tuggin in a trailer to get up to speed. I just wanted to clarify that so EPA will pass my address if it’s on their list!
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,013 #116 Posted June 6, 2019 If i had to guess, I'd say you would destroy the drive belt and transmission before you made that engine work hard lol Have i mentioned how much I love this machine?? 1 2

I'm thinking that transmission would be able to hold up fairly well but that drive belt would give up the ghost long before that engine even knew it was in for a workout. Ya know... we can test this... @Achto after you get that huge cloud of black smoke injection system setup for us you go ahead and get yourself some cogged pulleys and a belt off a motorcycle. Or even better yet... Chain drive. Let's see what snaps first. All purely in the interest of science & experimentation of course. 7
Achto 27,717 #118 Posted June 6, 2019 (edited) This one is for you @ebinmaine. This is a pic of the 14" stack on top of my test cell. The nice little cloud is the result of applying full load to a 65.4L Mitsubishi. This cloud only last about 5 sec or so then it burns nice & clean. Total fuel consumption today after 4hrs at 100% load was 643gal. Edited June 6, 2019 by Achto 5 3
Pullstart 63,055 #119 Posted June 7, 2019 I used to work in an R&D lab for a water heater manufacturer. We ran a 500,000 BTU boiler than ate $1 of natural gas every 8 seconds

As you can see there wasn't much clearance and there was no way that a normal GT battery was going to fit in there. The battery that I used is the same one used on FX style Harley's, figured if it could turn 100+ci it should be able turn 28ci. The price difference between the HD battery and a GT battery was a little hard to swallow though. Hey Dan, what’s the CCA of that battery? After sitting on a charger for 20 ish hours, it runs through a start cycle with glow plugs and intake heater, but it barely rolls over for 20 seconds until it acts dead. I’m thinking the 230 CCA battery isn’t enough.
WHX?? 49,101 #121 Posted April 15, 2020 (edited) All I can tell you it was a very expensive Harley battery to fit in where needed and have the power ...thought is was over 400 cca... Dan will be along. Did you try jumping it with a automotive style bat??? Edited April 15, 2020 by WHX24

Pullstart 63,055 #123 Posted April 16, 2020 I threw the 400CCA battery from my HD in and it’s rolling over just swell, but still no fire.
