WHX?? 49,101 #53 Posted April 26, 2019 (edited) Yup... check out dem fenders! Got any specs on the engine Dan, .... HP, torque and such. What size genny would have it been used on? Any chance we can get a pic of that relocated monitor panel on the hood stand? Edited April 26, 2019 by WHX22

The engine is 3.46" bore x 2.99" stroke. This works out to be 28.1ci (462cc). The compression ratio is 20.5:1. Power rating is (5.1HP ; 3.8kw) at 1500 RPMs - (10.1 HP ; 7.5kw) at 3600 RPMs. Torque rating is 18.4 ft lbs at 2300 RPMs. The engine weights around 115lbs. 2

prondzy 3,881 #56 Posted April 26, 2019 Dan you did an amazing job on this and you totally outdid yourself, i only see one tiny imperfection, just one tiny flaw in your design........... you didnt build it to bring to my house and leave it 1

It had roughly 5hrs on the clock and had sat since 2012. I guess most people at work were afraid of it or some thing. I won it on an internal auction for less than 5% of retail cost. Achto 27,717 #60 Posted April 26, 2019 (edited) As long as we're still on the topic of the Hatz engine I'll add a few pic's of the other minor alterations that I did to the engine. A pic of the engine as I purchased it. After I had the pulley to crank issue figured out it was time to move on to throttle control. Looking at the picture below, the arm for the throttle moves to your left to decrees speed and to the right to increase speed. This engine was designed to be a generator engine so originally the throttle arm was held full open (3600RPMs) by a spring on the throttle arm shaft. The tension on this spring had to be released other wise a small throttle cable would have buckled trying to move it. Second issue, no place to mount a throttle cable. To solve this, the bracket bolted to the right of the picture was made. It is bolted in the location where the ignition switch and indicator lights were formally mounted. Given the movement of the throttle arm I found it better to move the throttle control to the opposite side of the dash. Next item - get rid of the great big ham can muffler. It exited through the top and was just not going to work with the tractor. After removing the muffler I used the gasket as a pattern to make a mounting flange out of 1/4" plate. Clearance was going to be an issue and pipe with a tight 90 degree bend was not locally available, a 1 1/2" close bend header piece was purchased from Summit racing to make the first bend out of the engine. To get out from under the hood I dug through my pile of Harley exhaust pipes to find some thing with the right bend. An after market pipe from a Shovel Head had just what was needed. Before welding the header pipe together, the rims were painted and the tires were mounted. Having the tractor on all 4's allowed me to make sure the pipe would sit strait on the tractor. I'm not a fan of the looks of a bare cast aluminum block, they are just too hard to keep looking good. A light strip down & a little paint cured that. I did leave some of the machined aluminum show to break up the black. A light rub with some polish on occasion will keep the machined aluminum looking good. Some red paint on the tins, to help bring it together with the rest of the tractor. The recoil starter was polished and a custom decal from Terry was added to finish it off. I like the kill cable Kevin You could kill this Hatz engine with the throttle cable. I have mine set so that it will idle nice with the throttle knob pushed all of the way instead of it killing the engine. Why??? This way you have to shut the key off to kill the engine. A big reason for doing it this way - I rebuilt the engine on my dads Ford tractor, 2 weeks later I stop back over to see if it was ready for its first oil change. What do I find?? 120hrs on the clock & a dead battery. Because some one had left the key on after shutting the engine off. Tractorhead 9,064 #65 Posted April 26, 2019 You made a real great Job Dan. cool rework on the Engine you did, it wasn‘t be visible in the whole concept because it harmonizes that style, that it will be never be build for anything else.

Currently the air cleaner draws air from the fan on the fly wheel. I'm sure that there is no boost created by this and would much rather come up with some thing a little stylish. I just haven't figured out how to get rid of the box style one that it has and still keep the sensors that are inside of it...yet Edited April 26, 2019 by Achto 2

To tell you the truth, I took the air filter off, looked in the intake hole, saw wires & thought "I'll battle this another time" The manual that I down loaded leaves a lot to be desired. It has a lot of info yet leaves out wiring schematics and specs that I might need in the future. I might have to break down and purchase an actual service manual, if I can find one. Achto 27,717 #72 Posted April 26, 2019 (edited) Kevin @pullstart requested some video, now please bear in mind that I'm a wrench not a video artist. Some day I'll get that down. First off while digging through my few (very few) videos I found one from when I brought the engine home. I just had to see how it ran so I hooked up an IV bottle and did a test fire. Next is the walk around. Very windy out so I'm sorry for the noise on the video. Kind of nice having my street under construction, no worries running around on the road. Achto 27,717 #75 Posted April 26, 2019 2 minutes ago, ebinmaine said: Check out Dan's battery and tray. That was quite a challenge!! As you can see there wasn't much clearance and there was no way that a normal GT battery was going to fit in there. The battery that I used is the same one used on FX style Harley's, figured if it could turn 100+ci it should be able turn 28ci. The price difference between the HD battery and a GT battery was a little hard to swallow though.
