KyBlue 655 #1 Posted April 7, 2019 Picked up a rough 1990 312-H this weekend off Facebook. Mechanically it's sound. Starts Right up, Runs Strong, Mower deck has some swiss cheese going on but seems to mow alright. The hydraulics are starting to leak but that's to be expected. Not sure if it's a hose or the cylinder yet. There are somethings that need to be corrected such as the muffler is mounted wrong. It's vertical instead of Horizontal. That's a easy fix, except they cut the hood!! UGH!! The bigger issue and where I'm going to need help from the experts around here is the wiring. I hate wiring. With a very strong passion. The Key Switch went out, so instead of ordering a correct one, he ordered one from Amazon.com that said it fit wheel horse along with tons of other models. Needless to say, now they key is useless, the plastic connector for the key switch is gone - it's just wires with cheap crimp connectors. Toro has the Plug available so that's easy. However finding out what's supposed to be where is going to be the 'fun' part. I'm also not sure what else he's done. to start it you jump the solenoid, to shut it off use the choke. Any ideas what to check for? There isn't anything obviously rigged. It's also missing the correct Air Filter assembly. It just has a filter no shrouds or housing. I'll need to track that down at some point. For now I stole parts from a different style off the shelf. Pictures!
Sparky-(Admin) 21,567 #3 Posted April 7, 2019 A little elbow grease and you’ll have a nice rig! I like that seat...is there a manufacturers name and/or model number on it?
KyBlue 655 #4 Posted April 7, 2019 Mike I'll have to check. It's comfy. Used it for a hour or so earlier to mow before the rain hit and it was one of the better seats. I've never minded the elbow grease. Just having to start it the ghetto way, and use a choke to shut it off is lame! 1
pfrederi 18,024 #5 Posted April 7, 2019 There is no illegality in not using the fancy plug for the ignition switch. Insulated female spade connectors work just fine. Couple of my horses use them on the switch.. Insulated ones not like the PO used. His can short each other out. Wiring switch isn't that hard.. Just make sure the switch has an "M" terminal. Yeah I realize there isn't anything wrong with using those style connectors, but he used the ultra cheap ones, and the less than good crimping tool that pinches more than crimping. I prefer the self shrinking ones with a dab of dielectric grease inside to minimize corrosion. Found the wiring info I needed in the manuals section. Just a matter of taking the time to change the connectors and get it back the way it should be. Thanks!

Sarge 3,464 #9 Posted April 8, 2019 Has anyone found a key switch plug that has just the plug and the internal crimp connectors, sort of DIY kit? I have a couple that I'd like to just put a new 5 pin plug on with my own wiring harness - with no splices away from the switch. To me, those are a bad idea and corrosion waiting to happen - any pigtail type of harness will eventually cause problems from splicing it into an existing harness. KyBlue 655 #10 Posted April 8, 2019 Sarge, I'm ordering the one offered by Toro. I can use regular connectors but id rather keep it idiot proof (i am the one who works on them afterall). I got to take a good look at the switch this morning and while it's similar, it isn't the same. I'll get a new one coming alomg with the plug. Stay tuned!

Go out to the shop, sit on the wheel horse and just enjoy em. No BS, none of that other stuff... Thanks for the WB!

Sparky - No info on the seat. The sticker is worn off, nothing stamped in it I can find. I took better pictures of it if you'd like them posted, I'll be happy to
