Stepney 2,325 #1 Posted April 2, 2019 Hey, all. Figured you might get a kick out of this little guy. Not the oldest in my fleet, but definitely the smallest and most .. abnormal. Little Fairbanks Morse ZD stationary engine. 1.5hp, built in late 1934. Nothing about it makes too awful much sense, some important internals are made of incredibly weak pot metal, you adjust the bearings .. and by bearings, I mean cast lead bushings, with a rat tail file. There is no adjustment for the in/out play on the crank what so ever. It moves at will. Been fighting this one for a long while now, only to find just today that the timing marks for the magneto were cast wrong, and the slotted marks on the cam gears are also off.. most interesting. I've had 3 of these now and every single one had some unusual screw up with it. Definitely nothing like the quality of my earlier 1928 FM hit and miss. Anyway, finally got it to sing, and it ticks along nicely. New rings and a valve job really helped it out too. Ran the better half of this afternoon on less then a quart of fuel, and used virtually no oil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lN6KvkiSP4 2
ebinmaine 67,421 #2 Posted April 3, 2019 That's a pretty interesting Little Engine there Spenser. Please feel free to keep posting the stuff that is not Wheelhorse. I know there's a good many of us that get a kick out of most any kind of machinery.
