Guest 88vic #1 Posted March 27, 2019 Will a commando 8 transmission work and bolt up to a 701 frame ? Thank you.
953 nut 55,803 #2 Posted March 27, 2019 Should bolt right up, probably need to use a 701 shift lever.
Guest 88vic #3 Posted March 28, 2019 I am trying to raise a 701 from the dead. The transmission is completely locked up, the shifter is rusted off. I have found a good commando 8 trans. Just be easier to switch it out. They are 3 speed forward and one reverse just like the 701. Not sure if anything else is the same
squonk 41,345 #4 Posted March 28, 2019 701 does not have the parking brake mechanism
Guest 88vic #5 Posted March 28, 2019 So the commando transmission would be sort of an upgrade ?
Guest 88vic #6 Posted March 28, 2019 Im not picky on keeping 100% original as the parts for the 701 are hard to find. Im mainly looking to just have a working tractor by the time I source and put together the pieces.
Racinbob 11,232 #7 Posted March 28, 2019 Yup, bolts right in and you'll have the benefit of the upgraded shifter rails. As Richard said, the shifter may be angled wrong. Since yours is rusted off I'm sure it will be easy to find one or simply reshape the newer lever.
Racinbob 11,232 #8 Posted March 28, 2019 I'm kinda thinking the shifter will work. Here's a 657 that was given to me. The shifter is in neutral. Note how close it is to the rear fender pan. It was impossible to pull it back to 1st or reverse. This tractor is one of two I used to make a good 500 Special. When I tore them both down I noticed that the transmission was older than the tractor and probably a 5025. Somewhere along the way it got swapped out. Going from a later model to a round hood I would say the shifter will probably be fine since there's more clearance.
Guest 88vic #9 Posted March 28, 2019 Thank you everyone ! I will keep you updated in the next couple weeks.
stevasaurus 22,868 #10 Posted March 29, 2019 Don't throw out that 701 Transmission. All of the parts are the same as in the Commando transmission...except the fork shafts are the newer style, but even the old style fork shafts will interchange. Open that 701 trans up and show us some pictures, you would be surprised what some electrolysis will do if that trans if full of rust. You could end up with a spare trans for a small investment.
Guest 88vic #11 Posted March 29, 2019 My biggest thing right now that scares me is the hubs, they are pretty rusted onto the shafts, id like to re-use them for the other transmission. My fear is that Ill break them and wont be able to find replacements.
stevasaurus 22,868 #12 Posted March 29, 2019 Hubs are out there and are pretty much a dime a dozen. The trick is, take your time if they are stuck...make a puller from another hub. Start soaking it. Tighten up a puller and sit back and have a cup of coffee.

stevasaurus 22,868 #16 Posted March 29, 2019 Hey, that's a keeper. Good idea keeping it outside so it can get that weathered look.
stevasaurus 22,868 #17 Posted March 29, 2019 Looks like the hood was extended...probably had a Chevy 283 under the hood at one time.
Guest 88vic #18 Posted March 29, 2019 Im going to assume shes been out in a field for many years. Someone cut the hood up and extended it for I would guess a bigger engine. Im going to cut that back out and put the hood back to normal.
Guest 88vic #19 Posted March 29, 2019 Some people would see a pile of worthless metal. I see potential and breathing life back into it. With my 12 year old daughters help, we are going to get her done. God bless America ! And Wheel Horse of course !
stevasaurus 22,868 #20 Posted March 29, 2019 Don't get me wrong...I love that weathered look. Only Wheel Horse can do that. It's the Red paint they used. If you make it look like new, or you just bring her back to original, she is a beauty already. That is a nice horse to have a good time with your daughter. Take lots of pictures. She may one day start a thread looking to refresh a horse that her Dad and she fixed up when she was 12.
Guest 88vic #21 Posted March 30, 2019 I have 13 wheel horses so far. I plan on giving them to my grand kids many moons from now. If they dont want them then they will go to a museum somewhere where future generations can enjoy them.
