RR 65 Transaxle HELP

Recommended Posts

D_Mac

I picked up this mower last year. It was running when I got it home. Drove it like 20 yards, pressed in the brake and now it is locked in gear but wont move forward or backwards. If you lift up the back end and spin the rear wheels one spins clockwise the other counter clockwise. I have tried to manually shift it to all 3 positions but mower still wont move. I have tried calling A-Z to see if they had a replacement for it but they dont. I never have opened one up before so I dont know what I am looking for if I do. If anyone can offer some advice or has a replacement for sale I would like to know. The machine is in such great shape otherwise.

Looks like a few changes were made to the drive system. I would be looking that over real good. Looks complicated so getting the belts to a neutral position is likely critical.

Thanks for the information on other models with the same transmission. I sent that off to A-Z to see if they had any. If anyone else has one they want to sell I am interested. All the belts on mine are in the right position as I said it was working just fine when it stopped. Did not hear or feel anything break..Rear wheels are in gear as it wont roll but if you lift the rear end up and spin the rear wheels they each spin in opposite direction but when running it wont move forward or backwards. I am wondering it it is just all junked up in there as it sat for many years not used. I am afraid of trying to open it up as I have no experience doing it.

Go to the TORO Parstmaster...and enter model # 2-0102. This will bring up ASSEMBLY drawings...and the 5056 transmission schematic with part #s  This is the SAME trans in your RR-65 but is a much clearer schematic picture.

It's a fairly simple trans, but I don't know if you can still get part for it or not.

Check for play in the input shaft where the belt pulley drives the rear axle - most Peerless failures are right there at that shaft. They used a really small and lightweight bearing - once it gets worn, the shaft gives up the ghost.

Any advice for when I try to open it up? Will anything come falling out when I open it up? I dont think there is any kind of gear oil in there or maybe there is? I plan on taking alot of photos. I am hoping its just somethng stuck in there as I didnt hear or feel anything when it stopped.

Did you find a picture of the #5056 schematic.  There is one in the stuff that Garry West gave you.  I was just looking at it...I have not opened one of these, so I am guessing here.  All of the other Wheel Horse transmissions (not Peerless, Eaton or Foote) have you put the shallow side down and take off the deep side, then when you rebuild it, you build it in the shallow side.  I'm not sure if you have to get the drive pulley and stuff out of it first or not.  Maybe, take the side off that does not contain the drive pulley stuff.  I can't tell from the drawing.  You might have to pull the shifter out before you open it also.  These are the things that I would look at.  Taking the correct side off is usually important, but not critical.  Maybe take a couple of pictures and post them before you open it and give us a look.  With the lack of information that we have on this trans, I would take the time to step back and look at it once you have it on a table.  One other thing...if there is no drain plug for this trans, it is probably filled with grease from the factory...another reason to try to open and remove the correct side.

Yeah I wasnt sure as to what side cover I should try to remove. To be honest Im not sure as to what I am looking for once I do remove one. Being that it is greased filled I am hoping that something is just stuck and not broken. It sat for many years not used. I am just worried I will cause more damage then good. Its a shame to not have it repaired as it is in such great original condition. There is even the paper tag around around the gas cap. No rips in the seat. Love to see it working again.

I know, that is why I say, get it on the table and give us some good pictures of all sides, before you open it.  I think we can help you through the pictures.  Once it is open you can turn the input shaft to maybe see what is wrong.  I need to see where the drive pulley and other shafts come out of the case...these would help and making an educated guess as to the next step. :handgestures-thumbupright:  We might even be able to test some things before opening the case.  You never know,  I will be watching this thread so you don't have to wait days for an answer.

I don't know about that trans but a lot of the"Lawn tractor/riding mower" transmissions were packed with Bennonite grease. Nasty stinky stuff. Go to TSC or somebody and get a tub of rags.. If it has that grease in it you'll thank me later. :)

I appreciate you guys sticking with me. Couple of things are going to make me slow with responses. Number one is the mower is in a buddy of mines garage. So taking photos as well as working on it wont be as easy as if I had it here at my house. Second is that I was just diagnosed with 2 different types of cancer. Tonsil cancer and neuroendocrine tumors on my pancreas. When I was in the hospital having the surgery to remove my tonsil cancer I had a ct scan of my chest because I developed a pneumonia. The ct scan showed a mass on my pancreas. This isnt the more serious pancreas cancer, what I have is treatable. Both of them are treatable. They are treating the stomach first. Not sure of the exact date yet but surgery to remove the mass and part of the pancreas as well as placing in a feeding tube will be done sometime in the next couple weeks. The feeding tube is for the radiation treatment. Radiation in the throat makes it hard to swallow.  Six weeks recovery for that surgery then they will begin 33 treatments of radiation on my throat. These cancers are not related. Although it sucks to find out you have not only one type of cancer but two. I am blessed to know that they are both treatable. The treatment wont be any fun but with some good doctors and some good luck I should pull through ok. I am more worried about the radiation treatment then the " major surgery" on my stomach. Anyways it takes my mind off the cancer coming here to talk about the little REO. Depending on how I feel, my plan is with some help here I can get it moving again.

Here is video of the little pony traveling its last few feet. As soon as I yell out " rear discharge" I notice the confusing look on my buddies face as it wont move anymore. Ughhh

An instant failure like that points to a woodruff key being sheared, probably on the input shaft.

Good luck with the treatment - cancer is an evil thing but can be beaten with the right attitude and determination.
