Forwad and reverse don't work. Is there a simple fix or certain things to check before assuming the transaxle is junk ?

Make sure that the control is moving the plate on top of the transmission properly.  Check the oil level and let it run a few minutes before attempting to move.  Check the input belt pulley to see if it is loose.  Check both wheel hubs to see if they are tight on the axles.

I checked everything you had mentioned. I disengaged the drive belt and spun the pump on the transaxle by hand. I heared a rattle in the case and come to the conclusion it is junk.

The 1100 series has a filter to the left side as I'm showing in my pictures, the 700 series which is normally found in the 516-518H and the 312A doesn't have a filter or hydraulic lift but usually the manual lift arm on the left side of the tractor just like yours.

I found my problem. I took the pump off and found that the bolt that hold the gear on the end of the shaft snapped off. Once I remove the broken bolt, which is going to be tricky, and fish around for a washer in the bottom of the transaxle housing my problem should be resolved with a new bolt and washer. A cheap fix with a little bit if time and a new gasket.

I found my problem. A pesky little 1/4-20 bolt snapped off. I luckily found the bolt but the washer is in the bottom of the gear housing somewhere.

I put it all back together with new bolt and washer for the gear. I thought that might be the problem but there is something else wrong with it.

I put the 1100 in and everything is fit up and the control linkage needed tweaked a little but it functions just fine. I do have to make a bypass hose to eliminate the lift cylinder. I have Lowell the wheelhorse man, from Minnesota making it up for me as soon as I get the measurements. Fingers. Crossed.

The 1100 is installed with a few little tweaks of the controller linkage. All I need now is a cylinder bypass hose made up. Lowell the wheel horse man is going to make one once I send him the measurements. Here is a picture of the linkage.

The transplant went well. there is one thing that nobody mentioned about the job. If anybody goes to try this, remember that you need to have a custom bypass hose made to run from the bottom ofthe pump to the oil filter bracket, It took a minute to figure out but Wheelhorseman helped me out and sent me one.
