Charger and Raider LSD

Recommended Posts

12 hp Kohler

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

Thanks, Robbie.

The early raiders were 10 pinion LS.  In 1972, and I had one of these, the Raider 8 and 10 went to a #5086 Transmission.  The #5086 is the 1st 6 or 8 speed with 4 pinion differential and 1" axles.  The Raider 10s & 12s still kept the #5073 10 pinion LS.  In 1974, some of the Raiders went to the #5091 transmissions.  These were 8 speed with 1 1/8" axles.  The thing I am not sure about...I kind of think the #5091 could be ordered either way from the factory...8 pinion or 10 pinion LS.  The #5091 is the trans they usually talk about switching from one differential to the other.

I don't know much about the Chargers.  If it has the Sundstrand, I think most of them had the 10 pinion LS trans-axle.  I would pull up the manual from the specific Model # to be sure.  :occasion-xmas:  As you guys probably know...the Raiders are manual trans and the Chargers are the hydros.  A few Chargers went with the Eaton transmissions.  The Sundstrands would be the ones to have the LSD transaxles, but the newer ones could be 8 pinion.

All but one of the Charger Electros I have come across were hydro gear 10 pinions.  The last one had a piston to piston  (But 10 pinion) do not know if it was dealer installation replacing a failed hydro gear  (remember Wheel Hose pretty much said hydro gears were "Repair by replacement") or a later swap.by some owner.  i have never seen one with an Eaton.  i would suspect if there was one it was a home made job.  After all Chargers ended in 1972 but WH continued using Sundstrand through the no names and C series up until 1980 (C-125)

Paul, they were the Charger V-8 and V-7.  I've not seen one of these either.  Not sure if they are considered a Charger as such.???

I kinda forgot about those, I don’t think of those as normal chargers but I guess they are.

Thanks for all the info guys, this will really help :handgestures-thumbupright:

i am looking for a tractor for garden plowing and want something with an LSD. I would like to get a raider but didn’t want to end up with one without a limited slip diff cause I wasn’t sure if they all had it. Now I know what Years to look out for.

Robbie:  it is not hard to put a 10 pinion into an 8 pinion 6/8 speed.  Did that on a 310-8 that is a towing tractor.

I have considered that I just don’t have the time right now.

68, 69 vintage or even later Raider 12 with a six speed you really can't  go wrong. Later 310/12/14-8s are a really good choice. You wouldn't really have to have the LS as we do plenty of plowing with 3 speeds without. Heck we plow with a three piece on a RJ or 'Burb just for the halibut. Your gonna hang up with plowing LS is not  gonna do much difference. BUT and this is a big but soil conditions and plow setup do. You might even have a tractor now that would work decent.

Good luck and lots of plow pros here you need further help.

I currently have a charger 12 that I was planning on using as a plow tractors but it needs an engine rebuild and I don’t have the time or money for that right now. I would like to find a 68 or 69 raider 12 or 14 or a 10 or 1267 but if I can’t find one of those I would go with something else.

My cheap-o walmart U1 battery is starting to bite the dust again (barely able to crank it over fully charged, and ozzing everywhere) after 3 years on my 68' Raider and I am looking into a new battery for winter as I now have a plow setup. I was thinking of either getting the original 22NF battery that came with it or running a mazda mita battery which is a U1 size. Is the AGM worth the extra money over the 22nF even in the smaller size? I think the vibrations keep killing the cheapo batteries and I am trying to make sure I can leave it out in the cold and not have a problem starting in the winter. It does get down to 0F or below zero every once in a while. I don't think I want to go all the way to a 22nF AGM as it is $200.

      Thoughts?

I am picking away at the k series on the raider10. Basically the Piston blew through at the ring grooves as it appears the rings may have had too large a gap. I can feel a slight erosion of the bore where the ring gaps All lined up, but not even close to catching a finger nail.
I am hoping just hoping out the bore will get it back to round close enough that a ring job will do .
In any case I can measure the bore and report back. Discipline demands that I do not tear this engine down right now as too many things are taking up my time.
Just hoping the gurus can offer a bit of guidance

Just recently had a 10 pinion differential axle gears lose their teeth as shown in this picture from a post in 2014.
Was wondering if others have had this happen and if they determined the root cause and corrective actions.
I am considering replacing the two axle gears and five pinions that were destroyed but did not want the same thing to happen again.
I assume the failure was due to a worn cylindrical spring that I also plan to replace.
