Busted hub....hope it's not the Trany.

I busted the hub on my 73 12hp auto. Right side while sitting. No big deal busted one before. What has me concerned is the left wheel did not turn while still in gear and could easily push the tractor. Got it on blocks and started it again. The axle did turn on the right side but not the left. Is this because of a slip differential or is the Trany toast. Need any and all advise before I find another hub or if I have to put the horse Dow. 😞

On a Sundstrand you will need to open the tow valve to push/pull it.

I think if both wheels are off the ground and you spin one wheel the other wheel should spin the opposite way.

All my 8 speed and 4 speed tranny’s are that way, not sure about a Hydro.

The Sundstrand in those days had the limited slip differential and nothing will move without the tow valve open.

953 Nut. The tractor moved while the tow valve was tight. It moved right after the hub broke

The 1973 12hp Auto has either a Sundstrand model 90-1136 (model 1-0465) or 90-2046 (model 1-0460)  I had a 73 Auto (model 1-0465) with the 90-1136 and it was an 8-pinion differential...meaning that, with the wheels off the ground, ONE wheel would spin in the OPPOSITE direction of the other.  I now own a 1972 Bronco 14 with the Sundstrand model 90-2046 and it has a 10-pinion LSD in it.  That is, with both wheels off the ground, BOTH wheels will spin in the SAME direction.  So, if your TRACTOR is model 1-0460 it MAY have the 10-pinion LSD differential.  If it is model 1-0465, probably the 8-pinion differential.

Looks like the hub fractured on the keyway. I would say the transmission will have very little to do with hub failures. That is if the hubs are in good condition and installed correctly.

There can be a lot of factors the influence those hubs and the key areas. Of course wear, the amount of rotating weight (mass), operator use (with a large amount of weight on a wheel and reversing directions quickly one can exert high level of stress on the hub area), use of chains.

It looks like the machine was operating in snow and one would think there will be "give" or "slip" of the tire.

Looking at the picture, it seems like the hub was cracked and failed on the fracture line. Also, it is hard to tell but was the hub hammered on, it has a flat area that shows sign.

I have had a couple failures of the keyway area where they chunk out the keyway, but not fracture.

Need a few pictures of the axle key area and a closer picture of the fracture area of the hub.

I lifted the rear end. The left wheel turns and the right shaft turns the opposite direction. So I know the they are still attached, to use a simple term. That made me feel better. I was scared that since I was able to push the tractor on one wheel rather easily with the tow valve still tight. So I am hoping that all need is a hub. I put a request in on the Classified section. Ebay has them but rather expensive.

OILUJ52. No the hub was not hammered on. I think this is the hub I replaced about 7-8 years ago. Got the hub from a guy that has a bunch of WH and other stuff rusting in his yard.

There you go, sounds like a new hub will do it.

Just one question, was that hub mounted all the way onto the axle or overhung?
