What type bulk spark plug wire to buy?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

I know there are different types of cores and different sizes and resistor or non resistor.

Some of our engines have points. Some do not. Don't know if it matters?

I would like to buy 10 or 20 feet to have on hand.

If you go online you can find the old 7mm Packard spark plug wire in bulk pretty easy. I use it on everything. Inexpensive and well made.

Yeah NAPA has it in bulk. Mike @squonk was making some for guys at the BS last year he might even know part nos. It's just standard inductive core cable.

Even comes in RED!

just go to your local garage and ask the mechanic to save a set a decent set of plug wires for you when they change them out on cars.

I use either the good grade Beldon or Packard wire - lasts for years and the higher quality ends fit it properly. Don't buy any imported wire, I've actually found gaps in the internal graphite cores several times - which will drive you nuts. I always have spare ends and wire from sets off hot rods around here - easy to make a new coil wire in a pinch. One real key to success - a proper plug wire crimping tool. Best I've found is Dad's old Belden tool - probably 30yrs old now or more, but still works perfectly and rolls those ends over like factory. I had a newer version and loaned it out, not sure who didn't return it but that led to no tools leaving here without me attached to them.

Buy the 4cyl kit, it cost the same but then you will only need to buy 4 more tractors to but them on. :ROTF:

Would any of you if is it possible to replace the spark wires on a Kohler ignition module?  They look like they are epoxied in on the module but if you can get bulk wire, plug connectors and boots, is this something to attempt?

A new Kohler module for a M-18 twin looks to be about $120+/- so perhaps this might be more affordable if you can figure it out.

Thanks - Cod

I think that type is going to be very hard to get the wire out. May be possible and ignition module could

be damaged. Some of the older coils the wire could be unscrewed and replaced. The post it went on

had like treads on it so new one was twisted into place.

Aftermarket modules may be a lot cheaper.
