ShiltzC121 1 #10 Posted January 28, 2019 Hello Gentleman, Brand new member here and this thread is right up my alley. I have been a fan of Wheelhorse since I was young, thanks to my dad. He has a C-120 auto with the Tecumseh HH120 I think it is a ‘74 but will have to double check. It needs a rebuild finally and am trying to find parts. I can locate most items but the governor gear is especially hard. Looking at getting .10 piston and rings along with new valves, rod etc. but not having much luck due to low availability of tecumseh. I have two questions for the group: 1. Any good leads on reman parts or good source for the older tecumseh engine parts? 2. Has anyone swapped the Tecumseh for a k301? I was thinking about doing an easy swap and getting parts to rebuild the tecumseh as time allowed and parts are found my dad was still using his mower until this fall and I know he would like to get it back in service. i just had the Kohler redone on my c121 hydro last year. Thanks in advance
kto434 108 #11 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) I have a Charger 9 that originally used a Tecumseh motor. I swapped in a Kohler M10 for the Tecumseh (to avoid the trouble of rebuilding it). It was easy and I am pleased with the conversion . Edited January 28, 2019 by kto434 4
pfrederi 18,125 #12 Posted January 28, 2019 If you swap in a K301 you will have to change out the ignition switch. Techies with solid state use magneto type switches teh K301 will need a switch with and I terminal 1
SPINJIM 1,981 #13 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) The C-120 8-speeds with Tecumsehs were labeled as a C-120 Special. I have one that was converted early on to a Kohler. maybe by the dealer in order to close a sale. I changed the decals on mine to a C-120, but the model number on the steering tower is for the 1974 C-120 Special. I've heard that the Tecumsehs were used either to offer a lower priced model (the Special), or because Kohler couldn't supply enough engines. Seems like an easy conversion as long as you change the ignition switch as Paul said. My C-120 was a junk yard rescue, and is my go-to tractor for yard work. kto434 108 #14 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) I think you can use the original switch if you wire it like this. Edited January 28, 2019 by kto434
ShiltzC121 1 #15 Posted January 28, 2019 Thanks for the info, I will discuss the conversion with my dad. Much easier to get a Kohler and parts. I’ll keep socking away the tecumseh parts one piece at a time

Check the model number on the left side of the steering console. The label on your tractor look like it is in very condition, so it may have been changed from the original.

Everything on this tractor seems very original, haven't had it running yet, but hope to get to it this summer. Just needs wiring work I was told. Ha Ha!! We will see! SPINJIM 1,981 #21 Posted February 25, 2019 That model number 1-0356 was for a C-120 with a Kohler engine, so it seems that someone switched it to a Teumseh engine for some reason.
RandyLittrell 3,886 #22 Posted February 25, 2019 (edited) Thanks guys, I was under the impression it came that way. I will say it must have happened very early in its life, the patina matches perfectly. If the techie runs ok without a big fuss I will leave it, but I do have some other kohler motors I could put in it. It would be nice to have a matching patina, I plan on cleaning it up, paint the wheels and leave it as is.
