Sarge 3,463 #52 Posted January 29, 2019 Same here - schools closed for the next few days, the first time that has been needed since '78/'79 blizzard. Tomorrow will truly hurt - and Wednesday morning is when the local service picks up the trash and recycling. Highly doubt those guys will even run this week. I plowed everything out yesterday morning while it was still bearable, cleaned up the Horse and put it away - still has 30wt oil in it and no way I'm trying to start that engine until this weekend. Forecast says thirty's Saturday and 40's Sunday, with rain. That should really finish off our roads nicely - going to be a busy year. Sarge
Sarge 3,463 #53 Posted January 30, 2019 Got a call last night from one of the brother in law's - stuck his truck on a township road just outside of town. Got my winter gear on, fired up the Dodge and went out to see if we could pull it out. Only one road still passable after checking on the other two most direct routes to where he was sitting - those were blocked with 8' drifts completely. Had to back down the road he was stuck on for a 1/4 mile to get into position and the road was a solid sheet of ice. No traction, no chains but we did try it - his front axle disconnect on the Chevy was either broken or froze up, no front drive at all and he was in deeper than he thought. Those junk Firestone tires just spun, jerking the Dodge pretty hard so I gave up and just gave him a ride home - not destroying a $42,000 truck for his stupidity. He never should have been out there since both the County and Township trucks gave up for the night due to the conditions. He did get a snowplow to go out and jerk it out of there last night - surprised they would even do it but we're a pretty tight small town here. Not really fun being out late at night in -25*F weather and high winds, it was blowing right at 35mph out there - felt like a knife going right through your face. I sure miss my old Land Cruiser or even the old Samurai I had with the winch on it - would have been an easy recovery for either one of those. There is a big difference between the older trucks with full-on transfer cases, solid axles and lockers compared to the newer part-time/on-demand 4wd systems. He thinks that Chevy could go anywhere since it is 4WD, not really the case with the way it is built being an early 2000's. This is the second time he's gotten stuck in the last week - my son in law broke his transfer case adapter on his 3/4 ton Chevy the last time, he's on his own if he does it again. Stormin 9,981 #54 Posted January 30, 2019 Just been looking at the weather you lads are getting. It would scare people to death over here. They think -12c is cold. Get a couple of inches of snow and everything grinds to a halt these days. In the '60's I was riding a motorcycle 19 miles to work in more snow than that. Take care and keep as warm as you can.
