formariz 11,987 #1 Posted January 23, 2019 First let me ask everyone's indulgence about this topic. I am not announcing nor expecting anything to happen to anyone, far from that.Nor am I diminishing anyone else's importance or effectiveness. However it is good practice to have a contingency plan for something which is vital and important to anyone or any organization. I don't have to tell anyone how important this site is to all of us who care about these tractors. Specially appreciative are undoubtedly many of the new members we have, and those are what alerted me to this matter. Specifically were those that join and it is evident that their main reason is that at the time they have a problem with a Wheel horse. Although many jump in immediately with help, it is our beloved file moderator that stands out all the time. He is always lightning quick and precise. His ability to always be there at the right time , the beautifully organized manual section which has really become an encyclopedia , and his ability to immediately see something that needs to be placed in that section is nothing short of amazing.Hence my question, whether there is a contingency plan for the possibility that he may not be able to always do it. It is a crucial part of this forum, and although it will undoubtedly continue to exist, i feel that without the kind of attention it gets now it could quickly suffer from it. Again not diminishing anyone else's capabilities but those shoes may not be easy to fill.

No there is not a contingency plan for File Mod or any other position here at RS. I'm pretty sure if I get whacked by a bus while crossing a busy street that you guys wont notice a thing 1 6 2

Sarge 3,463 #6 Posted January 24, 2019 I absolutely agree - but who else in this world has these Ninja skills on reference materials/parts numbers and sources like his??? Not to mention, that psychic ability to appear out of nowhere in about 5 seconds, no matter the time of day/holiday or any other factor? The only way I can see a replacement is one trained by the Guru himself - and that would take a long and studious apprenticeship. We've already lost one of the best electrical wizards ever seen - wish we could get some insight into this loss as he is truly missed. Sarge 2 1
SylvanLakeWH 25,490 #7 Posted January 24, 2019 Good point... As with any organization - you don't really know or appreciate what you have until it's gone... This place, the Mods and Admins are one of a kind... Perhaps your post will nudge someone here to reach out and offer to "apprentice" the files mod position... Meanwhile - Thank You Mods and Admins... Your efforts are deeply appreciated.

For reference: a few years ago Karl posted up that we were looking for a couple of moderators. Only two members stepped up (JimD and TerryM and of course they got the jobs!). So I can only assume that folks see moderating as an undesirable position to have. I’ve been doing it for 10 plus years now, it’s not difficult usually and with the team of Admins and Mods we have on board right now many things that need moderating are dealt with before I even see them.

953 nut 55,069 #11 Posted January 24, 2019 I have always considered it a major accomplishment to post an answer accompanied with (correct) manuals before Garry! He is a treasure for sure, but I think it is a bit morbid to talk about having a contingency plan for replacing him. We nearly lost Karl, @nylyon, a few years ago because of an accident, thank God he was not more seriously injured. I don't know what would have become of the site, but I am not too sure we need to develop a planned succession of leadership. We have been blessed with some outstanding members and moderators and I can only hope and pray it will continue to be so. 4
WHX?? 48,771 #12 Posted January 25, 2019 (edited) I think what 953nut is saying is how's your will looking Karl? With the site owner, his hand picked mods (aside from the the Dino ) and all the guys & gals we have here tis truly a marriage made in heaven. If it wasn't for Garry and his file notes my 1067 would be a throwaway kitchen gadget by now not to mention all the other tractors and attachments in my harem. When one digs into the files section and sees all the notes in there one has to guess that the files mod is to be given credit for most of it. As an employer I like to think most of my employees are replaceable should they quit or sucumb to the dreaded bus. Not so much with the fine folks here. BTW Mike @Sparky we might throw you under the bus...... Garry I would jump in front of it to save him! Edited January 25, 2019 by WHX21 1 1
nylyon-(Admin) 7,268 #13 Posted January 25, 2019 Garry is irreplaceable, me on the other hand, I do have my will in place, Mike has the second set of keys, except of course he’s planning on getting hit by a bus, and me a truck... 1

Sarge 3,463 #17 Posted January 25, 2019 Yes, until @Save Old Iron appeared here there were many things lost on us in the electrical realm - especially those old school electro-mechanical regulators for the starter-generator systems. His knowledge and willingness to test/verify/repair those things were amazing - even bigger, was his ability to explain it in layman's terms to us to understand them. I sent a couple of non-working regulators to him during a project to understand what could fail in those original Delco parts - it boiled down to dirty contacts. He even researched and figured out what metals were used to make those contacts and almost made the decision to buy a quantity to start repairing them. But, in the meantime, new market replacements became available and cheap enough to put that project to bed quickly. His generational placement meant he was that magic bullet - old enough to know the older tube/electro-mechanical systems and had stayed keen on learning the new systems along the way. That is rare, like older mechanics that in one job can rebuild/tune an old points distributor and the next job diagnose and repair a computer controlled efi system. Those types of folks don't last very long historically - time and age gets to them all in the end. I have no idea where he went or what happened to him - he just dropped off the site completely. I have yet to see any postings about any contacting him to date since he disappeared, which is really sad. He was a very valued member here and a lot of entertainment - especially with the squirrels. I have searched around here until I'm blind, I had his name/address/phone numbers saved somewhere, but cannot find it. Sarge 2 1 1

His knowledge, ability to make anyone understand his explanations, wit and sense of humor are very seldom seen. I hope that he is OK but know that he was unhappy with a few things here and decided not to participate any longer. There is a very good possibility that he is watching somehow. If he is I ask that he please come back and give us another chance. One usually only realizes how much of a loss someone is once that happens.. 2
