Jake Wilkerson 38 #1 Posted January 3, 2019 (edited) Just wanted to share my experience with this job. It wasn’t nearly as daunting as I expected. Found the piece sitting in the bottom of the oil pan, luckily it missed on the important bits on its way down. Probably had 8 hours total in the job. Hardest part was remembering where everything went after it sat on the healing bench for 6 months before I ever started. I did not replace the governor gear because I wasn’t tooled up to remove the valves and cam. (I am now) but I have a brand new Kohler gear sitting in the bag if it decides to go next. However I did delete the balance gears because for the life of me I didn’t have the patience to re-time everything. I notice a VERY slight increase in vibration at low engine RPM. I found the Cresent brand double jointed long needle nose pliers very useful during reinstallation. Quick video of it back running Edited January 3, 2019 by asleepz Added pictures
WHX?? 48,853 #2 Posted January 3, 2019 (edited) Nice save.. Glad to hear you ditched the balancers... you'll get used to the little bit of vibration. BTW was that flag spot welded or riveted on? Edited January 3, 2019 by WHX21

BTW was that flag spot welded or riveted on? It was riveted on. The new one looks to be spot welded. I was surprised that it turned out to be a material failure and not at the point of where it was attached to the shaft. WHX?? 48,853 #4 Posted January 4, 2019 Thanks just curious. ..I've seen them both ways just trying to nail down years they were changed. Odd to hear that was not the failure point.
