BMW1 42 #1 Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) Three issues/several questions: Issue 1: Does anyone know what would've caused the needle bearing damage in the first two pictures? We took the transaxle apart because the snap ring holding the axle on came off when PO tried removing the hub. They pounded on hub until the snap ring let loose. We found the snap ring and it looks fine but found loose needles in the bottom of the case and traced it back to the bearing in the picture. Would the pounding have caused the damage on this bearing? If not what might've caused it? Where would be the best place to get a replacement bearing? Issue 2: I've seen several postings on the bolts used on the ring gear failing because they are grade 5 instead of grade 8. Are those the bolts in the third picture? This is from D200 Model: 1-0611 9 Serial#: 1035982. Was there a year WH started putting the correct bolts in? Just wondering if we need to replace them since we have it apart. Issue 3: Is there a document that shows the torque specs for the transaxle ring gear bolts and other internal parts and for the bolts holding the transaxle onto the tractor? Thanks. daveoman1966 3,762 #3 Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) Here is a schematic of the 1-0611 gearbox. That bearing is # 1532 (item 4-13)and new for about $25 each. There are 3 of those bearings in this gearbox. I have two good used 1532 bearings to fit if wanted. Since there is not a thrust washer on this side, it is likely that the inner rim of the bearing cage was worn thru and....when you pulled the shaft out of it, the individual roller bearings just collapsed out of the cage. As for the grade 5 or 8 bolts...not sure but there would be Nylok nuts with blue or red Loctite from the factory. While you have this apart, inspect the parking pawl (item 4-33) for damage and repair / replace as needed. If the teeth are worn off, have a mig welder build them up and file down to shape. Sarge 3,463 #4 Posted January 2, 2019 That bearing being damaged would be from a shock load - probably ramming into piles of material with the blade or jerking it against a heavy load. You'll have to measure the bolts - later models were upgraded to 3/8" grade 8 versus the earlier versions that were grade 5 and 5/16" diameter. I think there was also more "meat" on the bull gear side plates to accept the heavier bolts. Make sure the pickup screen is clean of debris and isn't damaged - that oil is picked up by the pump and any debris will destroy it in short order. pfrederi 17,885 #5 Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) Take a close look at the needle bearing on that side end of the shaft you have not removes (#4-32 in the picture) That is a bearing that is NLA anywhere. If the needles are loose indicating wear (or shock damage) you can try to find a good used one or buy a new 1/2" deep bearing and press it it about 1/8" below the outer face of the tranny housing.
