clueless 3,012 #1 Posted January 1, 2019 Young man in Florida has a 74 c160 auto he is trying to sell, he says it sat for the last 10 years, wiring needed some work but the tractor looks to be in good shape. I talked to him on the phone today, he said he got it from the original owner, says the hour meter has 660 hr but it's not working because the wires are corrode . I am really just interested in the engine but it's still a 9 hr round trip for me, if I can get it for the right price I may go for it, damn sure don"t need it . Anyway he said the drive belt was shot so he put a new one on it, he says when you go forward it jumps and bucks and there is a grinding sound, said his local guy said sounded like the synchronizer is bad or needs to be adjusted . What do you all think. If it's a simple fix, may be a loose hub or pulley it may be worth buying. I just don't need more projects.
Tuneup 1,433 #2 Posted January 1, 2019 The C160 Hydro is on my short list. Almost scored a C120 auto but the lister would not get back with me. Maybe you should take the view of your horses being a dealt hand. Take the 160 auto and throw one of the lesser horses back. Always shoot for a high full house.

I hear you, I do plan on selling a couple soon but as you know nobody down here want to pay any money for them. I've got a '97 416-8 with a 42 inch sd deck with 230 hr I would love to sell but when I tell them $900.00 they look at me like I'm crazy.
pfrederi 17,886 #4 Posted January 1, 2019 The "local guy" who blamed a synchronizer must be a real rocket scientist.... All C160 autos had Sunstrands. Now there can be a lot of causes of grinding in a Sunstrand but one I can be sure is not the cause is a syncro....

Now what are some of the causes, I don't want to drive 400 miles to find out the trans needs major work.
pfrederi 17,886 #6 Posted January 1, 2019 Some Sundstrands can growl a bit. Doesn't seem to cause any issues. But there can be many causes of grinding noises. Unless it is the idler pulley most all are going to require opening it up.....I wouldn't want to guess depends on where the sound originates from does it do it all the time etc. ...too many variables........ Ed Kennell 38,682 #7 Posted January 1, 2019 I would bet on a bad drive belt tensioner pulley. I have bought several cheap tractors that were listed as having bad hydros. Two had bad idler/tension pulleys with one having nothing left of the bearing and the center of the pulley. The tractor still drove, but bucked and screeched. One had a missing key on the hydro drive pulley.

Sarge 3,463 #9 Posted January 2, 2019 If either one of the acceleration springs is bad in the pump's control section it will buck and jump like crazy - had to replace both in my '73 16 Auto (same tractor). The grinding I suspect is probably those large center bearings that support the axles/differential plates - mine are worn a bit and that extra play causes it to growl a little on side hills or when pulling a really heavy load.
