875 the first hydro

Recommended Posts

p38js

@pfrederi I found this service bulletin about the cam box leak on the 875’s, I would love to know what all is included in p/n 6066,  I can not find any info on the kit.

@bellevillerod I plan on getting wheel blanks and centers from Miller tire and adjusting back spacing as needed, And maybe cutting an inch off the seat pan. Those are off in the future I have to fix the leak and make sure the trans even works first.

I wish I knew what was in the kit. Maybe they added the  o rings and the triangular metal plate that holds the bigger ring????  The bit about installing whole kit may mean you have to add the same plate and o rings to the other side of the pump not just behind the motion control.

Ok guys after some research and help from pfrederi here is what I believe to be kit p/n6066 from service bulletin 68.  I’m not a machinist and I had to go back 25 years to high school mechanical drawing class so I think I have enough measurements to make shim p/n6826. All this to stop a leak in the cam box area of a Sundstrand transmission I hope it helps. It’s a shame these parts are obsolete these are good machines and should last another 50 years.

We don't have any Hydro tractors here in the fleet right now but we may in the future...

I appreciate you taking the time to figure this out.

It's good to follow along and learn.

If you want to plow snow a hydro is the only way to go in my experience.  Used a C-81  for a couple years now 2 charger 12s for plowing and an electro16 for blowing.   Haven't used my Case DC3 or Farmall M in 4 years now....

It is great to see another 875 being brought back to its former glory!  I’ll always have a special spot in my heart for those specific models.  As many on here are familiar with, it was the tractor that I grew up using and that my dad and I restored about 4 years ago.

2016!

@p38js that is so awesome that your family bought that tractor for you.  I agree with the above sentiments that you should include them in the visual aspects of your restoration as much as possible (as they are willing to give input) to make them feel part of it.  As they witness the labor of love put into bringing it back...it will connect them even more to it and make the gift mean even more to them and you!  I can’t wait to see this one take shape.

26-12-12’s are really big tires.  I have a set on my super Cub and they look big on a stretch frame 1000# tractor.  But if you are determined to go that route, welding in your own centers would be the way to go. If memory serves me correctly, one side has a fair amount of room for backspacing but the other side has less.  That is the side that you will need to use for a point of reference.  I learned that lesson the hard way on Caleb’s JackRabbit this last summer...:no:just trying to keep you from the same fate.

Keep the pictures and progress reports coming...I’m on board with this restore!:greetings-clappingyellow:

@PeacemakerJack your 875 is what got me started looking for one.  When I first saw it at the show I new that was going to be my next project. Always wanted a big tire tractor absolutely fell in love with aldon’s And Richie’s modified gt14’s.  I hope my modification skills are as good as my restoration skills.  Time and patience will tell.  I’m still patiently waiting to see if the hydro even works. Rewiring, bring the fuel system up to working order and tracking down parts for the pulley system.  Best part of the job is tracking down parts with my youngest daughter teaching here how to do research and talking to different folks about the history of these fine machines.

Whatever you do, don’t foam fill a 26x12-12. We filled a set at work for a test on a mower and they came back 198 pounds each. 😳  I’m sure that tractor is going to look good no matter which way you go :coffee:

top pic is a 24x13-12 turf saver on a 10” wheel, not sure of backspacing but I believe it’s about 1-1/2”...... bottom pic is a 24x12-12 turf master on a 10” wide wheel but with about 3” backspacing on it, no spacers. This pic is before I swapped to hydro. I had to run spacers to clear the pump if I remember correctly.👍

I'd love that but it's too pricey

It was about $400 for both tires. Mouse’s cost of course. 🐭

I have another 875 roller for sale on York CL.    If you find your hydro is bad, may be we can work something out.

Ok wiring done fuel tank, fuel gascolator cleaned and fuel filter installed.

Poor little 875 is now in two major pieces,  so that the hydro can be cleaned and work can start on the cam box

Richie now I might have to go with the turf tires.  Ughhhh so many choices.  I don’t think I will have to fill the tires with anything. As long as I have the tractor it won’t see hard labor anymore

Looking at your tranny pictures i am not sure your 875 is a virgin....You have the tow valve on the top.  i thought the original wheelmatics had the tow valve on the back of the pump and required a 1/2" wrench to operate.  The top mount like yours shows up in the 1969 service manual...that also shows the triangular plate and 2 o rings that were not in the first wheelamatics....

Edit:  In 1968 they started using sundstrand 96-2040 which had the tow valve on the top.  In 1967 and earlier it is 3100077 and all operator manuals show the old tow valve on the back that used a wrench

True story!  When we received the decal kit from Terry @Vinylguy we weren’t sure where to put the decal indicating the tow valve open and close position.  All of my years growing up, I watched dad lift one back tire and spin it backwards to move the tractor around. Struggling.  How easy it would have been to open the valve, move the tractor, and close the valve but he was unaware of that feature since he never had a decal for it.  I’m at Coulter Caleb’s b-ball tourney right now but when I get home I can post some pics of dad’s tranny when we had it out for the resto...

I thought this hydro looked a lot the one that is on my gt14. @pfrederi will the o-rings still work?

You will probably find the shims are already in your unit..so save the 2 you found!!

You know it is funny we frequently complain that we live in a throw away  society, we don't fix things any more we replace them.  However when you look at the early wheelamatics 3100077 the service manual was pretty slim.  it was repair by replacement  (back to the future???)    which I guess happened in your case

By the way if your tow valve is leaking look at the sundstrand O ring post pinned on the transmission forum It has the O ring and nylon backer ring #s

The Sundstrand hydro tranny on the GT 14, to my knowledge was never installed as OEM on any other Wheel Horse tractor produced.

The WH owner's manuals number list it a 5070 tranny, but that is essentially irrelevant, at least to my way of thinking in today's world.

Its the original VIN tag on the Sundstrand unit that is the only number that means anything now.

That number is 90-2062.

The Sundstrand on the GT-14 is the same as the Charger/Electro with the exception of the reduction gears. They can be changed out to get the job done if needed.
