And that's driving with the cruise set between 55-60, get it up to 65-70 and best I've ever gotten was 5.9. My 460 would get 9-10 pulling a trailer, and roughly 12 empty, seemed to pull better too. Maybe I just haven't found the right one yet, but I've driven several V10s and wasn't impressed with any of them. My ‘94 460 gets about 12 at best. The Excursion I mentioned above would get 17 on the highway if I drove the speed limit. I have no idea why since it had the 4.30 gears in it. I currently have a 2003 F250 that also has 4.30 gears in it and it will only do 13 1/2 on the highway. Plus it has a six speed manual that you would think would help. I can’t figure it out. I’m an mpg nut, so it really drives me crazy I can’t do better with the F250. I will say that while the V 10 was definitely faster and pulled the camper better than my 460, I still loved the low end grunt of the 460. I always hated winding out the V10 going up hills while towing even though the engine didn’t seem to mind.
Sarge 3,463 #29 Posted December 27, 2018 I've worked on almost all makes and models from the last 50yrs of trucks available in this country - and some that weren't even available here as well. Out of all of them, early 90's Dodge/Ford/GM were some of the best-built trucks we've ever seen in the US. All were reasonably efficient on fuel, could pull a house and were pretty much bulletproof. Try to buy an early 12 valve Cummins powered Dodge 3/4 ton from the early 90's, they are the highest valued old pickup out there aside from certain models of the Toyota Mini Truck (Hilux). Same goes with the HD series of the GM trucks of that era and especially the early 90s Ford with the 6.9 & 7.3L diesel engines. There are 2 of those early 90s Ford diesel models running around this area that belong to their original owners - both are old Farmers and both trucks literally look new. Both of them have put together a list of names of those that are worthy and can bid on their truck when they stop driving or die, not kidding. Personally, I want the 92 F50 in two-tone blue and white with the 7.3L engine. Last I heard, it has 66,000 miles on it and still doesn't have a scratch anywhere, plus it's been garaged during its entire life. There are examples of that around, but be prepared to pay a premium and have to travel to get the right one - they are out there, just have to look really hard. I would love to have another 1st gen Cummins, not a day goes by that I don't regret selling my 93 Dodge dually Cummins 5 speed that I had in high school. I worked my butt off to buy that truck. Then my senior year I moved in with my Grandpa and his wife. She was the nose in the air snooty type, and didn't believe that a high school kid needed something like that "old noisy clunker" and made me sell it. I have never forgiven her for that, among some other stunts she pulled. I sold that truck to a buddy of mine, who drove it for several years before selling it to a kid in Wheeler TX who did high school rodeo. I was in Wheeler about 3 yrs ago doing some auto glass work, and saw my old truck sitting in the weeds behind the house we were working at...broke my heart to see it like it sits now...paint all flaking off of it, one fender tore off, chrome on the stacks all pitted and rusted. Tried and tried to buy it back that day but they wouldn't sell it, they were planning on pulling the engine out to do the 12 valve swap in their 06 F350. Those old 6.9/7.3 IDIs were some good engines as well, a lot of guys around here put them down and say they were nothing but junk. I love it when I get the call from those guys that their newer trucks are broke down and they need a tow. I get a bit of a chuckle hooking up to their new rigs with our old 1990 F-Super Duty 7.3 powered wrecker. They keep telling me one of these days we are gonna get a couple new wreckers, and I tell them go ahead they'll just sit there. I don't need nothing fancy, that old Ford and my 98 Freightliner FL60 rollback with the 24 valve Cummins do the job just fine, and when they do have problems I can do all the repairs on them myself, rather than my truck being down for days waiting on the mechanic to get to it. I did find this truck while searching this morning, probably going to call them in the morning and then give the banker a call. Truck is in Abilene TX so a bit of a road trip to go pick it up, but it is what I've been looking for, and I can't seem to find the right one here locally. 1999 F250 with the 7.3 and 6 speed, nothing fancy which I like. That hitch is gonna have to go though. Running into a standard receiver hitch with your shin is bad enough, I can imagine this one would make the most polite person utter a few choice words

What else might need a turtle neck hitch?
Razorback 1,035 #32 Posted December 31, 2018 A camper on the back of that truck could also account for that type of hitch. Without the camper, that’s a real knee-knocker!
Sarge 3,463 #33 Posted December 31, 2018 I'd be a bit wary of any diesel of that era in TX - no offense, but most of those lived a really hard life on the oil fields being beaten to death for years on end. Not unusual to see every single driveline part completely destroyed on those. If it is a truly good truck - it would have a staggering price tag to match. I've been chasing a guy around here to sell his 1992 Dodge 3/4 ton 12 valve Cummins manual trans extended cab for years - the thing is in excellent shape and under 200k on the clock - but you'd have to pry it out of his cold, dead fingers. A good re-paint is about all that one needs as he's been very meticulous about taking care of it since buying the thing new off the lot back in the day - one owner trucks like that are really rare. The next time I see that blue and white diesel Ford I'll have to grab a picture - you won't believe the condition of this truck for its age - truly amazing survivor. ohiofarmer 3,265 #34 Posted January 3, 2019 My '02 Cummins Diesel has been a good truck for me. It needs some work on the utility body to bring it back. The only major stuff was a lift pump, injector pump, and computer. It hurts at first, but over the lifetime of that truck, it seems to be worth it. A mechanic told me to absolutely stay away from those new ones that you have to put Urea in for emissions control. BTW, if any of you guys need a trick to remove the front wheel bearings on a 4WD Dodge, I made a tool for that... You should consider the truck with the manual transmission. The likely failure of a automatic on an older truck just seems to make sense in spending a bit more.. I absolutely love the six speed manual heavy duty transmission that I have. I have pulled heavy trailers with it with no complaints. I had a 5 speed chevy before, and it is really easy to find a buyer as there are not a bunch of them around

refracman 167 #36 Posted January 3, 2019 Seven years ago I started to look for another truck, took 1 1/2 yrs to find the right one. A 1992 F250 ex cab long bed 5.8 with 68k on it with no rust and one owner up here in the rust belt that aint no easy task! I would of got a diesel but as i only put 3-4k a year on it and only pull my big trailer loaded maybe 4 times a year I couldn't justify the cost. I pulled the motor and put gt40 heads, SS headers , cam to bump up the ponys and changed out the 350 gears to 370s. She'll pull well enough and empty gets about 15mpg. good luck hunting!
