wheelhorseman 3,211 #255 Posted May 14, 2020 Update on Scottie: Since Scottie's last surgery in February, we have been working on retraining his bladder and urethra. We were scheduled to see his surgeon in later March early April for a follow up and to make a plan moving forward, however with the COVID-19 pandemic going on, Scottie's appointment was cancelled and never rescheduled. It was a blessing in disguise as we were able to listen to Scott's body and go accordingly to his own needs. Everything was going good for his retraining, he was able to be capped for about 2 months and he was able to pee without difficulty. His body woke him up at night to go to the bathroom, he was able to urinate and empty out his bladder without having much in his bladder. Everything was going the way Scottie wanted. It was not until this past Monday May 11, 2020 that Scottie woke up and was not feeling well. He had a terrible stomach cramp and an uncontrollable bladder spasm that was not reacting to his bladder spasm medication. I monitored him and he was running a low grade fever of 100.9 and he was unable to keep sips of water down. I called his surgeon and asked him if I could give him the antibiotic that I had from his previous hospitalization. That is when we were told to go the ER in Rochester to have an ultrasound done for his kidneys and to have a urine culture done. We went to the ER and it was confirmed that Scottie did in fact have a bladder infection and infection in his kidney. They sent us home with the antibiotic we had at home for 14 days and told us that they would call us back after the culture in three days. Since we have returned home Monday, Scottie has had fevers and has thrown up. The ER nurse called me today and informed me that the antibiotic that we were sent home was found to be ineffective and that they had to start him on another antibiotic. He started that today and I need to keep monitoring him for decreased urine output, persistent fevers, throwing up, and decreased intake to call the on-call urology and go back to the ER and be admitted for IV antibiotics. We are praying that this new antibiotic works and that Scottie can stay home and not go to the hospital for the IV antibiotics. If all goes well by the end of summer Scottie will no longer have the supra pubic catheter, but only time will tell if he will form the scar tissue in the urethra. Thank you for keeping our family and our son Scottie in your thoughts and prayers and we will continue to update you. 2 2

wheelhorseman 3,211 #262 Posted July 1, 2020 (edited) Update on Scottie: It has been a while since I last updated our Red Square Family on how Scott has been doing. As you can see in all of Lowell's other posts, Scott has been more active and involved in more outdoor activities. Scott has been able to get back on our tractors and help with the planting and the cultivating of our garden. In addition to driving the tractors around, Scott has been swimming in our swimming pool daily, working out lifting weights and working on his abdominal muscles, tossing the football around with his friends and brothers, playing corn hole, and tossing the ball around for Maverick (Travis' dog). Due to the increase of activity that Scott is participating in, he was experiencing some bladder spasms and he was having difficulty urinating, so I called Scott''s surgeon and we had to go in and be seen. Our appointment was yesterday and we found out that his kidneys are healing nicely and he is able to empty out his bladder by urinating normally. We were also informed that Scott is scheduled to have surgery on July 13th to have his catheter replaced with a new one and the surgeon wants to see how his urethra is healing. The plan is to keep the catheter in as a back up for Scott in case he forms scar tissue and has difficulty urinating. Scott, Lowell and I would like you to keep our family in your thoughts and prayers for his upcoming surgery on the 13th of July. wheelhorseman 3,211 #275 Posted January 8, 2021 (edited) Update on Scottie.... Here is what has been going on since our last update in June. This summer Lowell and I took Scottie and two friends to Wisconsin Dells for a mini vacation before school started. During this mini vacation Scottie was able to be a somewhat normal teenage boy. We found out that Scottie and his buddies liked to go racing in the go-karts. When we came back school started for Scottie and he started his junior year in high school as a distance learner. After long talks and meetings with the school and Scottie, it was decided that Scottie would start school with a typical course load and have a 504 in place if he needs it. Unfortunately, we have had to use the 504 at times when he has difficult nights sleeping and bladder spasms. Scottie has done all of his assignments by the due dates and for the first quarter he was on the High Honor Roll (this is the A Honor Roll). In addition to being on the A honor roll Scottie was also the Medford Tiger for the month of November. Scottie was also able to go to some of the home football games and be on the football field with his team. This fall Lowell, Travis and Scottie attended the Plow days in Wisconsin and he had a good time. Since Thanksgiving, Scottie's suprapubic catheter was leaking and he was leaking from his penis tip. Called and spoke with his surgeon and he wanted us to monitor his situation. We did do just that and we ended up scheduling surgery on January 5, 2021. So on Tuesday, Scottie and I headed back to St. Mary's Hospital to have yet another surgery. The plan was to replace the suprapubic catheter and to scope Scottie's urethra to see if there would be any new scar tissue. The surgeon came in and talked to Scottie about the option to remove the suprapubic catheter if everything is fine. Scottie opted to keep the suprapubic catheter in as a back up in case something goes wrong. Scottie came back from surgery and the doctor came and talk to both Scottie and I. What we found out was this, Scottie has no new scar tissue in the urethra. The surgeon replaced the suprapubic catheter as Scottie requested. Our new goal is this...in 3 months or sooner depending on if the catheter falls out on its own, Scottie will no longer have the suprapubic catheter. Scottie is having a difficult time with this because he is scared that he will no longer have a back up if he can not pee normally. Lowell and I are asking for continued prayers during this transitioning time for our family. Edited January 8, 2021 by wheelhorseman 1
