PeacemakerJack 10,738 #177 Posted March 8, 2019 Thank you Joette for the update. Way to go Scottie for standing and walking. I know it is not going to be easy but I hope that you take courage and keep at it. Moving as much as you can will not only help physically but also mentally. The mind feels much more rejuvenated when we get up and move around some. We as a family and a TeenGroup will continue to pray for healing, successful surgery, and strength during the recovery. Be Strong buddy! We also will will be praying for Bryan as he is winding down his senior year toward graduation. That is always a busy time and goes by in a heartbeat! I hope that he will be able to accomplish the necessary work and make some positive memories in the process.

wheelhorseman 3,211 #185 Posted March 26, 2019 (edited) Update on Scottie Last week was a super busy week for Scottie, as Tuesday, we went to Rochester for our appointment with his orthopedic surgeon and to get x-rays and scans of his pelvis, clavicle and shoulder, and his right elbow. We were told that his pelvis is healing and has a lot of calcification and that they are not too worried about his pelvis fractures. His clavicle and shoulder still need more time to heal and his elbow will require another surgery in June. This surgery is too remove the hardware in his right elbow as it is impairing him from extending his elbow fully. He has his follow up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on May 20th to see how well, his clavicle and elbow are healing. He is to see therapy and get a home exercise plan to help him regain the muscle strength in his lower and upper body. Scottie has no restrictions from the orthopedic stand point but urology has some therapy restrictions. Thursday, Scottie went to his therapy appointment to get fitted for a wheeled walker and to get a home exercise plan to help regain his strength in his lower body and upper body. Scottie got fitted for a wheeled walker and he got a home exercise plan for his lower body, and he was referred to occupational therapy for his upper body and elbow therapy. Scottie got sent home with 8 different exercises to do at home and he was told that he could only walk during his therapy visits because if he would happen to fall while walking he could break his pelvis again and may require surgery. So walking at home is out of the question for now but will be in the near future. Friday, Scottie met with the occupational therapist and he got a home exercise plan for his upper body. Once we got home from therapy, Scottie was walking into the house and his right ankle decided to give out and he required some assistance getting into the house. Once we got into the house he started to have some bladder spasms and catheter pain which is continuing on today. He is taking his medications around the clock which kindda help with his pain at times. Scottie did some of his home exercise plan over the weekend but was limited on his lower body because of his bladder pain and spasms. Yesterday, Scottie was experiencing bladder pressure and catheter site pain, that he asked me to flush out his two catheters for him. As I was flushing out his suprapubic catheter, I was met with resistance and we had to drain his bladder through the penial catheter. We go in on April 18 for another surgery to replace and exchange his catheters and to see where we are in terms of his reconstructive surgery on his bladder and urethra. Today, Scottie had his second therapy appointment with both occupational and physical therapy. Scottie was able to do more upper body exercises that his lower body today due to his pelvis fractures causing him some pain and discomfort. Once Scottie started his lower body exercises he felt pain in his pelvis fracture site and so the therapist had to alter his therapy program for him. He did some walking and some standing but all in all he had a very tiring day in therapy. Scottie has been working very hard on his school assignments so he can turn them in before the end of the quarter on Friday. With the end of the quarter wrapping up for him, he has been working on his Social Studies, Science, English, Small Gas Engines, Health, and Choir. This young man has everything done to his best ability except for two classes. Bryan is slowly winding down his senior year at school and he slowly counting the days until school is out for him. Please continue to pray for our boys and family as we go down this long road. May God bless you and your families! Thank you again for all of your support. wheelhorseman 3,211 #194 Posted April 5, 2019 Update on Scottie Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy have been a real workout for Scottie. Physical therapy works on Scottie's lower body and regaining his muscle mass and strength and that takes a toll on him. Occupational therapy works on Scottie's upper body and regaining his strength in his arms and upper torso. This is his favorite therapy, because he likes the different exercises and it does not cause him much pain in his catheter and Scottie's favorite therapist is Brandon his occupational therapist. Therapy will be delayed for the next couple of weeks as he needs to recover from his surgery. On Saturday, Scottie started having extreme bladder spasms that resulted in him having urination around the penial stent catheter. He was able to be irrigated without any difficulties, so I just kept a close eye on his urine output and monitored his pain. On Tuesday was a very bad day for him as we realized that his catheter was clogged when I met some resistance while irrigating his supra-pubic catheter. I then capped off his supra-pubic catheter and attached the catheter bag to his penial stent catheter and that helped alleviate some of the urination around the penial stent catheter. As protocol I called the on-call urologist and informed him that we had a clogged catheter and that he was draining from the penial stent catheter instead of his supra-pubic catheter. This call was also to help ease Scottie's anxiety and it was also so he was assured that there was nothing else I could do for his clogged catheter. Much to our surprise, we received a phone call on Wednesday morning from Scottie's urology team and they were following up on the phone call from the previous night. They said that we needed to come in on April 4, 2019 (Thursday) for an emergency surgery to replace his catheters. So Lowell, Scottie, and I headed back to Rochester for yet another surgery, yesterday. Once we arrived and got Scottie prepped for surgery, we had a few questions about what was the plan moving forward. Yesterday, his urology surgeon told us that Scottie was having his two catheters taken out and they were only going to be putting the supra-pubic catheter back in, leaving the penial stent catheter out. This should help reduce his pain in this penis and the bladder spasms for him. We found out that once his penial stent catheter was out, it starts the clock for his recovery and to his reconstruction surgery. We found out that when he has the reconstructive surgery, he will be requiring another hospital stay. But we do not know when that will be as of yet. We do know that in the earlier part of May we are scheduled for another catheter replacement and then they will take x-rays and images to determine what his urethra has done and what our next procedure is. We also found out that his two major surgeries, his bladder and his right elbow, can be coordinated together so he has one less surgery. As we move onto the next chapter of Scottie's Recovery, we know that there are multiple surgeries ahead of us, intensive therapy both physical and occupational, hospital stays, and long nights with pain that will slowly subside. We know that God is with us each and every step on this long road of recovery. We know that with Scottie's upcoming surgeries, I am trying to coordinate around the tractor shows that Lowell, Travis, and Bryan will be attending. I know that Scottie and I will be there too depending on how Scottie feels. The shows that we are planning on attending include the Big Show in PA, Garden Tractor Daze in WI, and Pioneer Power in MN. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. 4
WHX?? 48,828 #195 Posted April 5, 2019 (edited) Thanks for the update Joette. Sounds like you missed your life's calling and should have been a nurse were a nurse in a past career. Hope to see you guys at the Portage show and I'm sure the guys at the BS would miss you guys but we would rather see Scottie mend so there would be many more shows in the future. Just like a injured pro athlete might have to miss a few games to be healthy in the future. Edited April 5, 2019 by WHX22 2

wheelhorseman 3,211 #197 Posted April 18, 2019 (edited) Update on Scottie Since Scott's last surgery, Lowell and I decided that it was time that Scottie needed a little time away from our house and our living room. Good friends of ours invited us to their house and it happened to be Scottie's best friend's. Once we got there, Scottie was able to be a normal teenager. He was able to play x-box, go outside, motor around their house, and even take a whirlpool bath ( that was long over do). Scottie had a blast that he even started planning when he could go back over and he counted the days until he could go. Therapy was a little hard on Scottie this week as the exercises that he had to do engaged his core and caused more pain to his supra-pubic catheter site that he wanted me to call his Surgeons and ask them what they recommended. Come to find out they said to continue on his tylenol and advil and his bladder medications for his pain and to put a heating pad on his abdominal area. Once we did that his pain subsided while the heating pad was on but once it came off his pain sky rocketed. We were also told that therapy only needs to work his legs and get them stronger and to leave his core area alone. Please check out Scott's Benefit and consider helping us out. God Bless you! Sarge 3,463 #198 Posted April 19, 2019 I'm glad to hear of any forward progress - getting out of the house is a big one in itself. That young man has a long, hard road ahead and your whole family is a big part of that - along with your friends here. The updates are appreciated and I'm sure the Benefit drive will help some - I hope there is enough continued support for you folks to survive financially as things like this are a crippling blow. Not to speak for everyone, but I think we're more than behind you folks as a group and want to do as much as we can to help. Sarge

wheelhorseman 3,211 #200 Posted May 15, 2019 (edited) Update on Scottie This last week has been super busy and also a nightmare in and of itself. We started off having our local benefit for Scottie, with not knowing what to expect Lowell and I thought that it was a great turnout. Tuesday came and Scottie and I were headed off to Rochester for another surgery, to exchange and replace his subra pubic catheter and to do some imaging and scans to see how his bladder and urethra are healing. All went according to plan on Tuesday that we were able to beat Lowell home from work. Lowell and I found out that the urology team is okay with the way that everything is healing and they have decided to move forward with his reconstructive surgery in June or July. Looking at our family calendar, Lowell and I have decided that July is the best month for us. So Scottie will be having two surgeries in June, one for a catheter change and the second one to remove the hardware out of his right elbow. Then in July he will undergo the major reconstructive surgery of his bladder and urethra. Everything was going along as normal until 3 am Thursday morning, when Scottie woke up and was complaining of his stomach not feeling well and he had the urge to throw up. I gave him his anti-nausea medication and within a few minutes he was vomiting. I checked his temperature and he had a low grade temperature, nothing that worried me. I kept a close eye on him through out the day and I even called up his urology team in Rochester and kept them posted on how he was feeling. Friday came and Scottie was not doing any better, in fact he was getting worse. I checked his temperature and it was 100.9 and he was complaining that it was hard to breathe and that he had lower back pain, had a headache that would not go away, and he was still nauseated. So off to Rochester we go. Once we arrived at the ER in Rochester, Scottie had multiple tests ran, from blood work, urine analysis and culture to an ultra sound on his abdominal area. He then spiked a fever of 103.5 and that was enough to admit him into the hospital. So you guessed it we were there until Monday afternoon. Come to find out, Scottie has yet another bladder infection and he is on the right antibiotic for it. He is now at home and he is doing okay and he even is getting outside and playing with his puppies. Thank you for all of your prayers and loving support for our family. We truly appreciate each and every one of you! If you have not already done so please check out this link, it would mean the world to Scottie if you did.
