cleat 5,706 #1 Posted November 18, 2018 (edited) A Work Horse GT-1600 went up for sale this morning a few miles down the road so I went and dragged it home. Transmission is stuck in reverse (frozen I bet). Supposedly engine runs fine but I have not started it yet. It is in the Shop warming up. I paid $150.00 CDN for it. Don't know yet if that was a good deal or not. Cleat Edited November 18, 2018 by cleat 7
Sparky-(Admin) 21,083 #2 Posted November 18, 2018 So that's about $115 American money....if in fact it runs as you were told that's not a bad deal. Is that a squeeze bulb I see in the fuel line? I have the same tractor with a Kohler Magnum 10 under the hood.
KC9KAS 4,741 #3 Posted November 18, 2018 @cleat That should turn out to be a good deal!
WHNJ701 4,164 #4 Posted November 18, 2018 is that duct tape holding the lights in?
Ed Kennell 37,492 #5 Posted November 18, 2018 Careful Cleat.....when it fires up, don't let the PTO yank the hood support chain. Good deal, she could turn out to be a real stallion.
cleat 5,706 #6 Posted November 18, 2018 No lights, I will need to fix that later.
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,308 #7 Posted November 18, 2018 If it fires up and runs then you got a real good deal, even if not and you have to put a little work into it still a pretty good deal. I almost bought a WorkHorse this past summer, it didn't look like much but seller said it ran and mowed good, figured it would best push mowing the yard around my shop. But like all other good deals it disappeared before I got the chance to go pick it up
c-series don 8,529 #8 Posted November 18, 2018 Cleat, knowing the way you restore your tractors I'm sure it will come out beautiful. Here is mine that I recently restored. I purchased this tractor brand new in 1984. 4 4
The Gman 476 #9 Posted November 19, 2018 (edited) Great deal in my books. Just bought two plows for $125 each. Saw that ad a few days ago....... Bit too farfrom me to take a peek. Did you see the ad for the 64 ranger....... Asking $1300.00. No deck and a so so re-paint. Edited November 19, 2018 by The Gman Ranger ad
cleat 5,706 #10 Posted November 21, 2018 Well, the transmission thawed out and tractor would then roll but shifter was loose and floppy. I believe he really forced it when transmission was frozen. Pulled shifter out and the collar on it just fell off. Roll pin was broken. Replaced roll pin then installed shifter and set the dog point set screw and it now runs through the gears perfectly. Oil is a milky sludge so I will be cleaning that up. I have two 5 gallon pails of furnace oil (same as diesel) that was left over when I pulled my oil furnaces. I might flush the transmission with some of that if it will work. Engine has not been started yet because fuel line is leaking and hard so I will replace that first. I believe that is why he installed the primer bulb. I will not re-install that unless it is necessary. Also the shifter boot is completely missing so that will get replaced as well. This is my first 8 speed Wheel Horse so I am on a bit of a learning curve. Cleat
c-series don 8,529 #11 Posted November 21, 2018 Quite obviously this tractor is in good hands. Keep us posted on the progress Cleat!!
cleat 5,706 #12 Posted November 23, 2018 Well, the engine started easily with a new fuel line. Mice have chewed a spark plug wire badly so I will order a new coil soon. All rubber hoses to air cleaner are bad So I will replace those. Wiring was a nightmare so I pulled the harness and cleaned it up. Transmission was drained (mix of water and brown goo) with front end jacked as high as I could. Then I put in 2 liters of furnace oil and ran with the rear end jacked up through all gears. Transmission was drained with front end jacked as high as I could. Transmission was then filled with 80W90 gear oil. Main drive belt is badly cracked and loose so I pulled it and will get a new one soon. I eliminated the ammeter and installed a volt meter instead. Reads 12V with key on engine off and 14V with engine running so charge cct is good. 4 3
cleat 5,706 #13 Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) The main drive belt was loose because the clutch rod and clutch arm have been badly repaired. Clutch arm fell apart when I removed the roll pin holding it to the shaft. I have found and purchased replacements from ebay. New belt is installed. Turns out a 5L850 (B82) is the correct length. I tried a 5L840 and it would not release enough to stop belt from driving even with idler fully down. Cleat Edited November 25, 2018 by cleat
