My welder spot welder a plate and strengthened hood inside then spot welded newbtank straps, the RJ’s were notorious for cracking around the gas tank neck hole on top of the hood. Another good idea is to put a longer neck on gas tank to be assured of being able to remove the gas cap easily. Filler Neck Supply sells new necks and caps for less than ten dollars. I believe if he welded the straps to a piece of sheet metal, like you did, then panel bonded it, that would hold up to the vibrations and bumps. Horse Play 393 #52 Posted July 10, 2019 Too late, I already glued them in at 8:00am this morning; so we shall see... I worked at a Ford dealership body shop and this stuff was amazing. We replaced a damaged bed side on a F-150; a few months later the same bed side was hit again and had to replace the bed side and that adhesive was some powerful stuff.
Horse Play 393 #53 Posted July 11, 2019 I let the adhesive cure for 48 hours with three bricks stacked on top the straps. This morning I hung the empty tank and is sitting there so far.. now if it will hold a tank of gas I'll be OK.
RandyLittrell 3,885 #54 Posted July 12, 2019 The nice thing is you haven't modified anything to try it this way and if it fails, you can try something else. Your right, I love panel bond! I used it to redo the handles on my body hammers and haven't had any come loose. Randy
AMC RULES 37,141 #55 Posted July 12, 2019 Given how that little 4hp Kohler sips it's fuel... will you ever really need the weight of a full tank of gas hanging on those glued straps?

Probably not; this tractor is gonna be eye candy for the garage and putt around the neighborhood once and awhile.
Horse Play 393 #57 Posted July 16, 2019 Looks like the adhesive bonded very well - I can pick up the hood by the straps. Also, the adhesive is sandable; what excess oozed over sanded away with 180.
Pullstart 63,201 #58 Posted July 18, 2019 I’ve heard that bonding two large panels together will yield such a strong bond that usually the steel around the seam tears before the adhesive. Looks good!
Horse Play 393 #59 Posted July 22, 2019 Sanded the excess adhesive so the tank can sit level followed by a coat of primer. 2
Horse Play 393 #60 Posted July 22, 2019 Then a coat of red; I didn't spend a lot of time on surface prep for the underside, but it looks way better than it does in this photo.
Horse Play 393 #61 Posted July 22, 2019 Then in a few days I will wet sand the primer and will be ready for paint.
Horse Play 393 #62 Posted July 22, 2019 And we now finally have a roller.
Horse Play 393 #63 Posted July 22, 2019 I had trouble getting the throttle apart, so I soaked it in vinegar for a few days. It loosened all the rust and allowed me to get the screw and nut apart. Then a quick coat of primer and silver. Anyone know of a source for a new throttle cable?
