What parts would you save from the inside of an 8-speed?

I picked up an 8 speed transmission of unknown year or model the other day from a fellow redsquare member.

The right hand axle tube has a crack in it so I'm going to take it apart and check over the internals to see what's usable for the future for me.

I have the 8-speed that came out of a 1974 c-160 that is very tired and sloppy.

It is most likely that I'll combine the best of those two Transmissions.

 

What are the really common issues or things that I should be looking for to try to save?

Which brings another question to Mind Brian.

 

Travelin Javelin, Brandon, wants to buy some shift forks for his 953. Is there a slide rule or micrometer measurement I can take to see if the ones I have are any good? The transmission itself shifts quite loosely.

The shift rails never wear out...if the shifter is sloppy, it is because of the adjustment of the dog point set screw...or the ball on the shifter...or the shift forks themselves.  :occasion-xmas:

If the axles on your trans are 1 1/8" you probably should send Brandon @TravelinJavelin the whole differential.

That's true. I don't know what size those axles are.

I'm hoping to tear into this tomorrow morning.

His axles are 1 1/8"...if you are going to send him just the pinions...count the teeth just to make sure they are the same.  The pinions should be the same.  The axle length could be different though.  :)

The axles on @TravelinJavelin 953 have been cut for the snap rings already so a complete differential seemed to be the way to go.

The shipping will be higher, but the piece of mind is Image result for priceless

that tranny if its a 1974 it should be a 5091 model which the 1 1/8th axles so this should be golden for sure!:D
