Jim_M 178 #1 Posted January 26, 2008 I got the GT-14 out today to plow some snow. This is the one that had the cold start problem a month ago. It's been sitting for a month so I decided I should probably use it today. It fired up on the second revolution of the engine. It should start good though, after all the time I spent on it! combatmp29r 27 #2 Posted January 26, 2008 Glad it worked so well Jim. Gee that blade looks kinda small for it :D
Jim_M 178 #3 Posted January 26, 2008 Joel, It just covers the width of the tractor when it's angled. Do you recognize it? It works very well on this tractor, it lifts about twice as high as the stock blade would, and I can put enough down pressure on it to lift the front wheels off the ground. Brrly1 1,146 #4 Posted January 26, 2008 Jim The correct blade for this tractor has the long A-frame and also sports a 54" blade that hooks to the three point hitch with the quick attach. It does look nice, what year tractor is it? John
chevelletown 37 #5 Posted January 26, 2008 Jim I like that plow setup Is that something that you made?
Jim_M 178 #6 Posted January 26, 2008 John, Thanks. It's a 68. It has cut down decals from a 520-H and the later color of silver on the wheels, so it's not 100% correct, but I thought it would be different to see a 68 with a "modern" look. I have another 68 that has the correct 54 inch blade. But I had never used this tractor until today and it was handy to get at, so I thought I would give it a try. Kelly 1,029 #7 Posted January 26, 2008 That plow kinda looks like one I have for the vert. shaft tractors. Is that one you made fit or is it stock? Kelly in MI.
Jim_M 178 #8 Posted January 26, 2008 Ken, It's a Wheel Horse dozer blade, but it's for a vertical shaft tractor, Commando V-7 or V-8 (I think). It fits the this tractor really well, but it's 42" wide, it should be a little wider. If I keep it on this tractor I'm going to put a 48" blade on this frame. Are any of your new horses for sale or trade yet? Jim
combatmp29r 27 #9 Posted January 26, 2008 Kelly, its a plow off a 69-70 vertical shaft. We talked about it awhile back over on another threead somewhere It does seem to work nice on there Jim. :P
Jim_M 178 #10 Posted January 26, 2008 Kelly, Joel beat me to it, but you were right, that's what it is. Jim
Rollerman 290 #11 Posted January 26, 2008 Looks nice Jim & glad to hear it fired up easy for you. I hear what your saying about the blade lifting higherwith your current setup. Overall I like the A frame setup Wheel Horse uses...but be nice if they would lift higher.
Jim_M 178 #12 Posted January 26, 2008 Stephen, You can't really tell from the pictures but when it's all the way up it's about 10" off the ground. Works great for stacking snow without having it fall back over the top of the blade. Jim
Brrly1 1,146 #13 Posted January 26, 2008 Jim they have to be 69's or newer 1-7441 is the model #.They were built from 69-73. If you need any info get ahold of me. I can always try and help. My buddy Steve [refracman] would probably be a good contact also on the GT14's. Don't tell him I told you this because I will deny it, but he is pretty wise about these tractors. Good person to know. John
Jim_M 178 #14 Posted January 26, 2008 John, They're 69's, that's about the third time I've typed 68, not sure why I do that. Old age?? I've been talking to steve already. I'm not very knowlegable about the GT-14's. Up until 8 or 9 months ago I had never owned one and had only seen one other one in person. I would like to come up with a deck for this tractor. I may even put the more modern Tachamatics on it and put a new style deck on it. Then again, knowing how I operate, I may just sell it or trade it. :D
Stigian 1,234 #15 Posted January 26, 2008 Nice looking snowplow Jim i like the idea of 10 inches of ground clearance, my plow when its finished should have about 8 inches clearance.
Jim_M 178 #16 Posted January 26, 2008 Ian, Thanks. I didn't realize that you got much snow over there. The company that I work for has a plant in Ireland and I go over there twice a year. I think if they got even a small fraction of the snow that we get here they would have to shut the country down. Jim
Stigian 1,234 #17 Posted January 26, 2008 Some parts of the UK get quite a bit of snow, down south we dont get that much If memory serves (its not too great at the best of times ) the last snow fall that lasted more than a few days was back in 1985-ish i think. A bad winter is more than overdue and as we have had a bad summer (think it lasted 5 days ) we might well be in for a bad winter. I think if they got even a small fraction of the snow that we get here they would have to shut the country down. That sounds about right to me The excuse the railways tend to use is "its the wrong kind of snow on the line" Is there a right kind??
refracman 167 #18 Posted January 26, 2008 Jim that be a good lookin unit there, dont change the blade, I used a 42 on one of mine to move bout 45 ton of stone, it was a pushin machine with that little 42 on her, had it moved on no time flat
Jim_M 178 #19 Posted January 26, 2008 Thanks Steve. You may be right about the blade, I ran at 1/2 throttle and there was no slowing it down.
Rollerman 290 #20 Posted January 26, 2008 Jim I don't know all the details ...but I've been told the pre tach a matic deck can used on the GT14's with a few mods? May be easier to find that style than a model specific?
Jim_M 178 #21 Posted January 26, 2008 Stephen, When it comes to these GT-14's I'm not afraid to admit that I know very, very little. I'll listen to any advise I can get. Obviously I don't care about keeping it 100% original so I would be open to any suggestions on mounting a mower deck on it. I have the original GT-14 quick attach, as well as some of the newer style front and mid Tachamatics, so I could probably go either way. Jim
BPjunk 184 #22 Posted January 27, 2008 Well No Snow in Virginia to plow snow with on my GT-14 BUT I can make use of the GT-14 another way! Bill in Richmond, Va. Attached Image
Jim_M 178 #23 Posted January 27, 2008 Oh that's just great Bill, now have another attachment to put on my wish list! Seriously though, that's a nice rig!
CHARGER9AUTO 3 #24 Posted January 27, 2008 John, Thanks. It's a 68. Jim Jim, Wheel Horse made the GT-14 : in '69 - '70 - '72 - '73 , 1968 they did not make any of them . Ben :P
Jim_M 178 #25 Posted January 27, 2008 Ben, Thanks, it's a 69, but I keep typing 68 for some reason. They say the 3 signs of old age are 1. Grey hair 2. Loss of memory 3...............................Uh, I cant' remember what the third one is. Jim
