How do I measure a drive belt for a hydro transmission?

I have the Sunstrand trans from the Charger 12 and have moved the Kohler K241 backwards.  I understand how to measure a belt, but the “parking brake” pulley is mobile.  Where should it be located to measure for a new belt?

Well th engine isn’t backwards, it’s back aways.  (Shorter belt needed).

Take a measurement of how the belt would be with out the tensioner, then add an inch or two to that figure. I would think that this would be a good starting place. It might take a couple trips back to the store though.

Well my first attempt to measure is about 1” longer than measuring without the tensioner, so I suppose I was close!  I can’t tell you how I came up with that number though!  :ROTF:  thanks Dan!

Take the distance you moved the engine x 2 from the original belt length.

It’s not the original engine, but I think I’ve got it close to check operation.  Thanks for the simple reminder though!

agree with achto, if you have a local t/s store, its easy to bring in your belt and match one up , good selection and prices, pete

WHX??

Get a couple either side what you think you need and return the ones that don't fit the best. Might save a couple of trips.

Same thing with a plumbing project. Bring your card. "Cleanout " (no pun intended) Home Cheapo or Lowes of all the fittings. Return what you don't use and with the return money buy Power Tools! :banana-blonde:

That way you don't have to explain why you needed more tools. :bow-blue:

I went with 5/8 x 78, the local parts store was 6 bucks cheaper than tsc and 8 miles closer too.  After running it around a bit, I probably should have gone with a 79.  Most likely I’ll grab a 79 next time I am at the store, and toss the 78 on a hook for another some day project.

Can’t say I’ve never done that before!  My wife is however, very understanding of needing tools for jobs.  It’s still cheaper than hiring the work out, when I can do it myself!  But then again,  half a wall on the outside of the house needs the vinyl put back on and I find myself wandering to the garage to play (work) or important things.  I mean, the house is wrapped... it’s not like it’ll ruin anything!
