Lane Ranger 11,029 #28 Posted December 20, 2018 Denny: one of the old tricks on the Kohler recoil spring is to use a board say 12 x 8 and some heavy four inch nails to rewind the spring on a flat surface first. I had pics of this when I did it last (6 or 7 years ago) but no more. I think you use a nail in center and six or more nails around outside of spring to “fence it in to size’” needed for inner recoil piece o the Kohler ( this trick works on other brand too. I placed nails around in a circle tighter than opening in recoil piece it sets in. Probably not the best explanation but best I can recall.
dclarke 4,046 #29 Posted December 29, 2018 (edited) Since this is a recoil start engine I wanted to fill in some of the empty space where the battery used to sit on this Ranger so I cut the battery tray down a little and welded up some 1/8" flat to make a tool box out of it. It's not very big but I think the boys will like it. I'll put a small latch on it and maybe add a small handle if I run across something that fits the dimensions.... I've also taken my seat pan to have cushions made and the guy tells me it'll be mid February before I get it back. Sarge 3,464 #31 Posted December 31, 2018 Great idea on the toolbox - it's the one thing I wish WH had thought of besides the one under the seat on the older models, which loves to lose small clips and other parts - lol. Sarge

Sarge Thanks Sarge. I had an extra hood knob that I used for a handle and the lid is heavy enough that I don't think it needs a latch. I think I'm gonna shoot the inside with some bed liner. dclarke 4,046 #34 Posted January 3, 2019 (edited) The hood on this Ranger had a dent on the nose where the “Wheel Horse” lettering is and I never could get it straightened good enough to be happy with it. Another member here gave me a nice nose piece so I’m attempting to replace the front of my hood with the the one I just got.I ended up using the front mounting tab from my old hood and now I’m ready to tack the new front onto the hood. Tomorrow my son in law is gonna come by and help me get everything lined up so I can tack the two halves back together. So far this has gone better than I thought it might, I think it’ll make a nice hood when it’s done. Edited January 3, 2019 by dclarke 7
dclarke 4,046 #35 Posted January 3, 2019 Got the hood back together this morning, I wasn't sure how this was gonna turn out when I started but I'm happy with it. 7

Pullstart 63,201 #40 Posted May 8, 2019 How do you keep all the tins from rusting being bare so long?
dclarke 4,046 #41 Posted May 8, 2019 40 minutes ago, pullstart said: How do you keep all the tins from rusting being bare so long? It just sits in the garage which is attached to the house. I try to keep a sheet on it most of the time but I’m not sure that helps all that much. I also try to keep the garage shut up when it’s raining..... I guess if they would start to rust a little quicker I’d have a little more incentive to get them done a little sooner. Lol
dclarke 4,046 #42 Posted May 11, 2019 I got the engine back together and ran it a little. Now I’m ready to take this tractor back apart and start prepping it for paint. 5 3

AMC RULES 37,141 #45 Posted June 9, 2019 Mix some up in an old Windex bottle...then spray down your parts liberally. Resist the urge to wipe them down, just let 'em air dry naturally. I've got parts sitting around here that have been bare metal for years.

At the pace I get things done I need to get some of this. Thanks!
AMC RULES 37,141 #47 Posted June 9, 2019 Then, when ever you're ready to resume... just hit your parts with a Scotch-Brite pad, and you're ready to pick up where you left off. 7
