257-H Eaton 1302

Recommended Posts

BMW Phil

I picked up a couple 257-Hs a while back. One sorted out pretty easily, the other has no drive.

In engaged position, forward or reverse, quiet, no noises, but no motion. Brake disc IS turning-
Jacked up the rear end- both wheels spin freely, with no effect on the opposite wheel. No noises.
I believe this indicates my failure is in the transaxle.

Who's been here before me? What'd you find?
From parts drawings I've found, the ring gear in the dif looks vulnerable, or maybe a key somewhere?

Is there a manual for this transaxle? The best I've found is pretty useless so far-

Here is the hydro manual. Click on the picture

Sounds like the problem may be in the transaxle

Suspect the Peerless SM above is the latest version. There are older ones that will come up if you do a search of our manuals using "257-H" in quotation marks. They are listed as 1300-Series.

If one of the Woodruff keys in a wheel hub has sheared neither wheel will drive. Watch the end of each axle with the tractor running and in drive to see if the axle is spinning in the wheel hub.
