C-81 Advice please

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, Just bought my first tractor, a C-81 for plowing snow.  I'm pretty handy and I can do most small repairs. If any one knows where I can get my hands on a service manual. I live in north NJ on the border of NY and wondering if there is anybody in this area that repairs these in case I can't... Also noticed some space on the left side front and rear axles. I've attached some pics. Any advice would be appreciated.

Major components like engine and transmissions have their own service manuals but 1978-79 was the only year they published a tractor service manual. Since the basic tractors did not change much over the years the info applies to most popular models. The file is large so split into 4 parts. Click on the picture to see what each section has in it.

There is a fair bit of service info added throughout the illustrated parts lists so find the one for your model number. Front hub end play is in most of them.

Rear axles usually have the hub flush with the end of the axle. Would not hurt to check the axle needle bearing which is behind the seal at the end of the axle housing for play. Hub should not contact the housing.

those front wheel bearings are available thru , stens  aftermarket parts or Napa, you should also get a shim pack with different washer thickness , to tighten up the bearing to wheel hub gap. that rear axel gap is the wheel to axel setting for row planting, looks fine as it is for regular use. also change the rear end oil, and probably replace the shift boot, silicone lube the shift boot shifter hole , for ease of replacement, slides on easily. lots of good pictures on this site , relating to your concerns, along with good feedback to your questions. good luck and welcome to the forum, pete
