Tachometer suggestions.

I have decided its time for a tach ,rather than listening and hoping I'm in the right RPM range. What do you all recommend , and why? Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for a handheld one for diagnostics or a 2-inch diameter one to put into a gauge hole on a particular Wheelhorse?

What model and year do you want to put the tachometer on and do you want a hand held or it mounted on the tractor ?

I did a post for a mounted tack that I still have on my C160. Works great still .

Got mine off of eBay for about $12. I think it was @953 nut that recommend it and showed a picture...

Google digital tachometer and you'll get everything you need. I got this one from Harbor freight and it works good.

What tractor/motor are you looking to put it on Kasey? I personally never had a use for a mounted tach. I set the high RPM for 3600 and idle for 900 using a hand held tach and run either the two. Talking single Kohlers here. Especially when running attachments. Hydros are always suposed to be running at high RPM anyway. Only attachment that I can think of that shouldn't be run WOT is a sickle bar. Just my

I'm using the same tach that Bob mentioned.  Works great.  I put the tape on the pulley on my 520H, and on the drive shaft of my 522xi.

On flywheel screen.

Or in the dash. I like my in dash tachometer works great

I bought a non contact photo laser tachometer, how ever it seems in correct. I  cut a piece of the provided reflective tape and put it on a good running 1725 rpm baldor motor and it consistently reads 4960 rpm. That isnt right.

Are there any pit falls? I thought maybe the the keyway may have been acting  as a second reflector, so wrapped the shaft with masking tape, painted it black and put another piece of reflective tape on, and had the same results. Thoughts please.

The one I got off ebay is kinda like that Kasey. Real inconsistent .... the non contact works for crap but you can also use it for contact as it came with a rubber tip you can put on the end of a shaft. Still a little inconsistent but (sometimes) useable. I think they saw me coming.

Upon redoing my test I discovered (read instructions) the device gives three readouts. Highest, lowest, and final rpm. The final , or 3rd readout seems spot on. It also wants .8 seconds of read time. Im much happier now!

this came from ebay, less than $10 delivered. 

Not necessarily a recommendation, but within my cheapskate budget. 

it seems to do a lot of hunting to find is mark, but it did work, and I was able to adjust the governed speed. (it was around 3800)

Search ez tach plus i have the matco version it works great! A little spendier than ones suggested already but it can be used on 2 and 4 stroke engines 1-4 cylinders, easy to use and has a non contact reading or you can use inductive clip that goes on the plug wire.
