Sunstrand Auto18 sudden axle leak problem

Recommended Posts

wheelhorse-c-161-1979

Well my old 1973 Auto18 just suffered a problem. And I have a feeling it is not good.

It has been running like a champ past several years since the Sunstrand tranny was rebuilt beautifully.

I have been following the instructions of keeping the oil clean, changing filters/oil every 50hrs etc..

Was using it yesterday and suddenly it stopped moving forward or backward.

It didn't take long to see that tranny  oil was pouring out the rear wheel axle. At least a quart or two poured out into that tray.

I jacked up the tractor and now  see that there is a good 1 ½" of exposed axle when i tried to remove the wheel.  Wheel did not come off as one of the bolts was frozen. So this is what I have.

I'm sitting down.... Can someone tell me how bad this is?? Gulp!

At first I thought it was just an axle seal. But that would be way to simple correct?
Thanks for any help on this matter!
Jack

I'm a bit confused by the bright shiny area on the axle. I presume the spacing between the hub and axle is about the same as it had been previously. Check the axle for movement front to back and up and down, there should be none if the bearings are good. Perhaps some foreign object (twine, wire ???) got wrapped around there and took out the seal as the axle turned.

Hope this helps.

Hi 953!,  No, actually the spacing occurred after i jacked up the tractor. It looks like the axle itself slid out a good 1 ½". Haven't been able yet to remove the wheel. as one bolt is frozen, but wheel turns freely. But the gap was a ¼" at best in the picture where the oil is leaking out. Then when I lifted it slid out to 1 ½".  Doesn't sound good.😰

The snap ring on the end of the Axle back inside the differential has come off at least partly if yo can move the axle in an out as far as you say.

best way I've found to deal with a frozen lug bolt is a long piece of pipe on the end of your breaker bar.  Use lifetime guaranteed socket and bar just in case!                   :ychain:

Hope that your hub will come off easier than your wheel  D Hubs can be difficult.

Unfortunately in the process of failing the clip has a dependency to chew up the splines on the very end of the axle meaning a new clip will not hold.  Axle replacement or drilling a hole in the end of it and putting in a roll pin may be in the future.

If the axle seal is the only place you are leaking from, that is a good thing.  Sounds like you will have to drop the transaxle to see what you got.  I have several extra o-rings for the hydraulic manifold, including the high pressure seal if you need any when reassembling it.  Stay positive!

      Gentlemen,

According to the hydrogear transmission manual, the tow valve on the ‘69 Charger 12 with the Sunstrand 90-1136 is “malfunctioning” because I am able to roll the tractor while it is closed.

To note, the parking brake pawl also seems to be broken, but I believe these issues are independent of one another.

Have any of you dealt with this issue of a malfunctioning tow valve before and can advise? I’ve got the ATF drained out and would like to address this before refilling.

As of right now, I have removed the tow valve and attached a picture of it. The O ring and nylon washer look fine to me, but maybe you see or know something different.

I noticed that the 876 was leaking trans fluid on the garage floor after i parked it.
Went out the next day and cleaned up the spot and put a can under the hydro.
Checked the next two days and nothing in the can.  So that told me it only leaks when its running
Fired it up this afternoon and let it run and cycled the lift a few times
Shut it off and checked all the hoses, filter and anything else I could see from the top
Crawled underneath and found fluid dripping from the area circled in the photo
If I replace the two parts noted on the photo is there a good chance that would fix the problem or are there bigger issues???

Hello!  I have been reading posts for a few years as I’ve tinkered with my two great wheel horses.  I have a 1968 Charger 12 auto with a leak coming from the motion control linkage, as well as the tow valve being seized up, lastly, the parking brake is not locking up the transaxle.  My primary concern is the leakage though.  Do I need to remove the pump and motor to get at this, or can one replace it with them in place and just remove the linkage pieces?  I suspect if I have to remove them, then fixing the parking brake makes sense, and maybe I can find a way to free up that tow valve.  I have it soaking in PB blaster per a comment on that issue from a few years ago.   By the way, my other horse is a C-81.   Attachments include a grader blade, a dozer blade, 2 decks and a cultivator.  Looking for a tiller for the Charger.

I have a D-200 that i changed the oil in the back out of the dipstick a couple weeks ago.    It had some water in it.     Now i checked again and its the same thing.   Any help on this would be appreciated.    How much oil goes in these Horses.   And is there separate reservoir for hydro pump and transaxle.
