I found this on craigslist last night asking $150. Is it a good deal or not. I don't really need it just thinking about it

Description reads:

"Looking to sell this tractor. It has a Kohler Magnum motor. Have not had it running.Got it on a trade and not what we are looking for. Has a good deck."

In running and fully working condition that is a 200$ tractor in my book. It's ugly like h... and you need a bunch of work and parts to make it decent again.

As it sits there in unknown condition, it's an anker.

Just my :twocents-02cents:

If the deck is really solid, it might be worth it for parts.  Offer $100.

Here in Maine that's a gold mine but I don't know where you're located, what the market is. Transmission alone is worth $175. Rear wheels are worth 40 bucks a piece. Deck is worth at least a hundred bucks.

Like the other guys said though. You got to put work into it to get it running. As it sits, bucket of parts. Up to you whether it's worth separating to get your money back if you need to.

In my area, seems like any running tractor is 300-500 and up.  I sold a 42” RD deck for more than that a couple weeks ago and thought compared to CL ads in the area, I was giving it away.  I’d jump all over it for that!

I think the deck and other parts are worth a look.If that hour meter is correct she is a tired critter. If the transaxle has the 1 1/8" axle that would be a plus.If 1'' axled there is not much of a demand for it.

I'd buy it for the deck alone if it is in good shape.

For me here in the great white north it would be a " offer less but take it anyway.

I'm sure you know the drill.

New fuel line, carb clean rebuild, coil?, tubes for the rear, one tire up front, deck spindles clean and grease, blades? the pto looks pretty well bandaided, belts, compression, wiring?

All that and more.......... it would still be in my wheel horse house. But then I'm a suckered for punishment. :)

It's all about dedication. The love of the machines.lm into my fourth one and each one becomes more exciting! I just picked up a 312-8 from a guy that was going to turn it into a toaster. I just couldn't see that happening brought it home runs and drives great. Tuned it up and cleaned it up . I also picked up a 520 Hydro which I really didn't need but the price was so good I couldn't turn it down. It all depends on how much time do you want to spend on them .

That deck looks good ….if the spindles are good,  that's worth $200.

Here's a thought. If you buy it for $150, and the deck is in good shape, I will give you $150 for the deck. Net cost ZERO.

PM me if interested. :)

Bandaided PTO? Shucks, I can pick up the same kind of clip Wheel Horse used from my local Ace hardware store for a buck or less...

" Got it on a trade and not what we are looking for.:laughing-lettersrofl: The seller must not not be looking for good machinery, then, because that Horse looks like it's either repairable or a fine source of parts to combine with another Wheel Horse to make a machine that will probably outlast what they're "looking for"!

It all depends on your situation. I would not think about buying it unless I needed a parts machine. Pretty beaten to me.

:text-yeahthat: Steve has given up on those old :wh: "basket case" tractors...

seems he's only committing to them easy restorations these days.  :ychain:

We all know the 312-8s are good workers if you don’t mind the Manuel lift. As @ebinmaine said the parts are worth at least the asking price. If I were you I’d buy it and tinker with it. If you can’t get it running you could always strip it down and sell parts off it.

If you NEED it or if you want to get into the parts business it would seem like a good deal. If you are only buying it because it has a low price then you will have more in it than it is worth in no time.
