MarkS 122 #1 Posted August 11, 2018 I have a mower deck of a L-157 lawn ranger. I put it on the tractor and seemed to work fine. I took the blades off one at a time to sharpen them, and made sure I put them back exactly like they were on. After I sharpened them, I tested it out again. This time I heard the blades hit. The blade on the left side will spin with the "drive shaft" but it will also spin freely. I took the cover off the gears, and they seemed to look fine. If anyone knows what could be wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #8 Posted August 11, 2018 937084 is a #5 Woodruff key. Dimensions 1/8" x 5/8" but it will not be exactly 5/8" because that is the size of cutter that cuts the groove. The key will be .612" long. 5/8" = .625" Garry

Before you take it apart be sure that the blade and hub were properly aligned and tightened. Seems very unlikely that the key would go bad at the same time you sharpened the blades. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #11 Posted August 12, 2018 The original key is likely hiding in the grease around the gear. Garry

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #13 Posted August 12, 2018 With the blade off the shaft the shaft can be pushed up through the gear enough that the Woodruff key comes out of the gear. Unless the gear and shaft are perfectly aligned when the shaft comes back down into operating position the key is pushed out of it's slot in the shaft and lays on the side of the gear. Mower is engaged and the key is thrown off to the side. Garry
