New 520 H Guy

Recommended Posts

whamm511

Just bought a 520 H.  I haven’t checked the serial # yet but it’s a 1997 or earlier from the Hood design. The ad said it was a 1998 but that had a different hood.  Also said it had 444 hrs. but condition says otherwise.  Still think it was a good buy. Runs really well.  Deck has a hole right where the rear left lift attaches so that will have to be repaired.  It also came with another smaller deck with no holes but still some rust.  I think that will clean up.

This is my first WH and Ill be looking for a snow blade, tire chains and wheel weights I think.  According to Tractor Data.com this model uses a 48” blade.  Will any of the 48” WH Blades work?  Or is it specific to this model?

It is a 1997. You will need the rear extension kit to install plow on a 520.

Welcome aboard, I will say condition doesn't necessarily mean hours are wrong, some people just have no clue about properly maintaining a ($7000 when new) piece of equipment, bought this '95 used with 236hrs a few years back from the Dealer I bought my Anniversary 520H new from in 1998, Jeff

Thanks so much!  Mine does run like a top. I looked at one with 1700+ hrs. on it and it ran good as well.

What you have is a very good place to start. The 520 is a one of my favorites.Jeff is spot on about some folks neglecting these tractors. If you check out my avatar you might make out my first 520 with 749 hours on the clock. The poor thing spent its entire life out in the weather. When the muffler went bad they put on another from who knows what.To close the hood they cut out the right side and half the top.The one you have looks complete. There has been a recent thread here where a member showed they results of grass build up on his 416h.You may want to do what he did and get the grass clipping out of the engine tins.It will be time well spent.Luck,JAinVA

I’m trying to find a snow plow now for my 520 H.  I’ve found one, however it’s only the 42” version and mine is supposed to use the 48” version.  This one looks different from the others I have seen.  Can you tell me if this looks right? Is it missing something?  Is it perhaps an Attach-A-Matic System?

That doesn't fit the horizontal shaft garden tractors but the vertical shaft lawn mowers instead you really need to find one that looks like what @1995 520H+96+97 posted above any long frame plow frame will work as long you also get the extention kit, 42" will work but when angled it will allow snow to fall back under that side tires, 48" is recommended, but if you can find a 54" even better, I originally bought a 42" and modded it to 50" then found myself a 54" ,Jeff.

Thanks!!  I will stick to the correct style.  The wider sizes you mentioned are still WH plows, correct?

Yes the first 2 pics were of the 42" that I add extensions to the moldboard to roughly 50" then in the 2cd and 3rd pics you'll see the 54" Wheel Horse plow actually mounted to my 520H.

Well I did manage to pick up a plow blade, 48” with the extension.  I haven’t attached it yet but I believe everything I’ll need is there.

I don’t know if the Attach-A-Matic systems were standard or not but mine does have it.  It also already has a hitch set up so that’s good.

I have a C145 hydro and when I engage the trasmission belt, the engine goes into the governor. The hydro control is in neutral, and the machine is not moving. The tractor will move foreward and reverse and seem be be responsive. But the engine seems to be loading the entire time. I have two other C145's and so no sign of this problem. The problem is the same cold or warm oil. I just purchased the machine, (knowing there was a transmission problem), and have done nothing more thean check the fluid. It is full and seem to be the right grade. I thought about an oil change, but thought I would throw this out to the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem.
      Any suggestions?
