Old Wheel Horse Tires vs. New Carlisle Tires

Recommended Posts

Teddy da Bear

I went to buy replacement tires of the same size

to replace the old cracked and worn tires on the

front of one of my GT-14's

See the difference? The one on the left is original

wheel horse.....the one on the right is the new carlisle

I am concerned this will throw the tractor levelness way off

as well as change mowing characteristics.

Geeeez......there is about 1" difference in overall diameter.

and they are both 18's!

Looks like you need to swap them both out Mike.

I know that doesnt address the height issue but you know that a size 11 shoe from different shoe companies will feel different on your feet. I know that Lee jeans and Levi jeans of the same size fit me differently.

Mike.........

mike,

is the air presure equal in both tires? the old tire is cracked quite a bit in the tread, and if the sidewalls are too, could it be that the breakdown of the rubber is allowing the old tire to swell? maybe not an inch, but...

Mike

you will probably have to change both tire's to level the tractor

and adjust the mower deck height to keep your mow height

the same

Mike "TDB"...I think Mike "Sparky" hit the nail on the head.

Not all manufatures make there tires equal even though the numbers say there the same.

Did you get two front repacements or just one?

You'll likely need to put a matching new tire on the other side to have them match & set the axle level.

I went through something similiar to this a few years back.

Ordered some big tires for my ATV...the back two tires were the same manufacture,"printed" size, & style....but made at differant dates.

One measured just under 28"...the other was right at 26" at the same pressure.

Yes I bought 2 at the same time.

Just mounted one because it needed it so bad.

Here is the one old tire (on left)

and the second new tire (right).

There is not so much of a drastic difference

when they are side by side "unmounted".

Maybe 1/2" difference.

TDB...all I can say is with todays troubled economy...Carlisle has obviously downsized there factory....resulting in downsized tires..

Not only that Stephen.....I am getting so

I don't know my left from my right.....lol

But I corrected it above.

I liken this to the companies that are downsizing

the volumes of their products, soups.....canned goods etc.

And yet they are charging the same price and higher!

If I'm not mistaken, tires have a 10% range of error allowance. I Don't know if it's plus or minus 10%, or 10% total. That's alot by my standards.

You can even see that the tread depth of the old worn out

tires is deeper than the brand new ones! That is badddddd.... (like Jim's pun...lol)

Looks like they cut back on everything...

This will definately effect turning in slippery conditions.

And just out of curiosity......who made wheel horse's tires

for them? I am sure they did not have their own tire company...

I actually thought it was carlisle...

Would have made sense if they made a deal with uniroyal being

over here close in Mishawaka.

Yup - had the same experience with my 312-8 - old tires had deeper tread than the new ones. Only changed them because they had some deep rock cuts. Rubber can't be that expensive!

TDB, Carlisle lists the mounted diameter and width of there tires. How far off were your new tires from the advertised specs?

Carlisle

I had the exact same problem when I went to get a new steer tire for my C195, THe new tire came and was over 1 inch narrower and also smaller around, but both tires were carlisle turf savers with same size printed on them. The older larger tire was made in the USA and the new smaller tire was made in I think Mexico. As a side note the tire dealer cared very little that the tires were different sizes and didn't offer to do anything to help, good luck
