ebinmaine 67,271 #4 Posted July 29, 2018 I know next to nothing about most auto racing classes but I've always liked those open wheeled cars. The old school hot rod look is just plain sweet. What's the drivetrain in those rigs?
Pullstart 62,787 #5 Posted July 29, 2018 Most are running straight 6 engines, there are a few allowed to run v8’s but they are limited to crate engines, I believe. The 6’s are pushing about 550 horsepower, so the v8 has no real advantage st the rpm’s they are spinning. We ended up overheating during a caution, but we were about .08 seconds from track record with about half throttle. Battling carb setup issues, but when you’re allowed only 10 minuet practices, it’s hard to tune a carb under full load in just one night. My my brother in law in the Super Late Models won a feature towards the end of the night. It’s a blast to be so close to the action!
ebinmaine 67,271 #6 Posted July 29, 2018 Love the old straight 6 engines. Had a 292 in an 81 Chevy. Heavy 3/4 ton chassis with 9 leaf one ton tear springs. Turbo 400. 4:56 rear. Offenhauser aluminum intake with a 450 cfm Holley model 4380 mechanical secondary carb. Found a bigger exhaust manifold ( from what I can't remember). Chevelle mid sixties front pipe. Turbo muffler. Changed the ignition timing a bit. Went down the road well.
Pullstart 62,787 #7 Posted August 11, 2018 Round 2, heading out to wheel it again. The ignition timing was too far advanced, running way hot. We got that dialed in, made some cooling modifications, now it’s time to run her hard! 1

Pullstart 62,787 #12 Posted August 15, 2018 So, looking back... it was the heat we won, we were getting ready for the feature. Sorry ‘bout that, I guess I was excited that the car made the show! We lead the entire feature by about half a lap, and in the last corner of the last lap, they threw the yellow, we overheated and blew the head gasket again. The car didn’t have the power to finish the race under power, but he coasted over the finish line and we didn’t end up in any victory lane again. It was Hall of Fame night, so they had Bob Senneker come out with his Camaro and a ‘32 Ford. 2
Pullstart 62,787 #13 Posted August 15, 2018 (edited) You can hear the car not running right towards the end, it was shutting off and firing back up coming out of the corners, I think the head gasket blew on 3 or 4 cylinders at some point! I believe those 292's had a 4 3/4" stroke! Whole lotta torque! Randy 1
