Just remember one thing, if you are using the sink and get distracted for some reason, like someone stealing one of your prized WH's, don't forget to shut the water off, those vessel type sinks have no overflows and you might find yourself installing a floor drain with a trap primer. And if you do , remember, no peeing in the floor drain .      Just kidding.

I picked up 6 pieces of this 8’ long C channel.  I plan to build a little track guide to make my finish mortar bed the best slope possible.

The track frame is welded up.  I’ll likely lay the corner pieces in, tweak and go.  The shower is the last part of the project, realistically.  I had a goal of being complete by Monday and it’s Friday.  Oh boy.

I installed the shower pan liner and tested to see if the water sheds in the right direction.  Time ran out to mix up mud and pour the top coat, but I managed to complete the light fixture!

My funky looking cobbled track/guide system is done and leveled.  I have a whole bunch of steel bar holding the drain down and I’m ready for final mud!

  Been following this and your certainly doing an excellent job. Pity your not nearer me. SWMBO wants our bathroom redone as it only has a bath but no shower cubicle. Though I suspect a bit quicker.  Only a shower over the bath. Bit dodgy for us as we get older. I've been told I will not be allowed to do the work like I did last time. I'll not argue.

  Just a question. What are you referring to when you say, MUD? We use plaster for walls, which are tiled if needed and concrete for floors.

Mud is my slang, for drywall (Sheetrock) fill, for mortar, for anything really that I have any input for mixing wet and waiting for it to dry

I didn’t like the way the center rib was creating a “spine” and raising up.  I pulled one screw, stripped the other, so I cut it out.  I am glad it was there for a guide but it would have been great to make it easy to remove.  Oh well, the final mortar bed is done!  I used a piece of steel to hold the remnants in, but a little bit of thinset will cover that area just fine.

 

my hands are ready for an ice water bath... just as soon as my tools are cleaned off!

We decided on the orientation of our wall tile and I started some layout / mass production.  Rylee had a gymnastics meet this afternoon and all went well so now it’s work time!

The membrane I was referring to is the fiber mesh you use in the corners and the edges where the panels meet. The redguard isn’t too bad a smell. Just don’t get it on anything you don’t want it on. It does not come off. I’m sure you have it figured out but you have my number if you have any questions about how I did mine. Looking good  Brother 👍

He uses Mapei water proofing instead of redguard. Either is good but the membrane fiber tape is what I was talking about. I watched this many times.

@19richie66 thanks for the links... and encouragement!  I have the mesh tape and had seen that you can do the joints the same as the corners without the mud.... just waterproofing.  That was my plan.  Should I go find the other drywall looking cement board tape and thinset the butt joints?

I did all of my joints with the backerboard mesh tape and thinset. You have to get backerboard tape as the alkaline content in the thinset will eat drywall mesh tape. I also thinset over all my screws. After that dried I went over all joints, corners and screwheads with redguard appling the fiber mesh tape in the corners/joints only and then coated the whole shower with two coats of redguard. I did it just the way he explained. One coat applied in horizontal strokes and one coat applied in vertical strokes. Overkill?...... I just wanted it right and not have to do it over later.

I just received a week extension on my inspection... so I’ll take another day to do it overkill... if you will!

Peace of mind knowing it’s right. At least as right as I could get mine. I had a friend that does tile come by as I progressed and he said I did a great job for a “non tiler”. He was impressed so I felt good about how I did. Believe me, the last thing I wanted to do was do it over. Once was bad enough.

My first coat is done!  I spent most of the afternoon trying to track down more mesh to lay in the Redgard.  Ends up being they combined it with drywall tape and made it super sticky!  It was nice dry fitting everything, except inside corners.  It was much easier to lay in the fiber mesh when the Redgard was wet.  

 

My first layer was complete by about 12:30 or so this morning.  Them saying it might have a strong odor is like saying the bathrooms at a tractor show might get used a few times!  It stinks yet this morning, but it’s rock hard and ready for coat number 2!

Looks great. Right color.👍  The drywall mesh and the tile board mesh are two different materials. The mesh I used was grey. The fiber mesh (membrane) for sealing the corners is a fiberglass style cloth.
