cleat 6,737 #1 Posted June 15, 2018 (edited) 520 has according to the hour meter over 3000 hours but runs and drives well. Some play in the steering but otherwise good. Maybe hour meter is not working properly. 312 has just 212 hours and is very tight. Does not currently run. I have not gone through either of these yet as I just got them home. I work this weekend so hopefully I will know more next week. 520 has the 42" deck from the 312 on it. It looks to be OK but I need to clean it up to tell for sure. It sure does not fit the 520 properly and it will go back onto the 312. I don't know how it sounds, I never engaged it. I also got another 42" deck thrown in that supposedly was on the 520 but it should not have fit well either (sitting on the floor in front of the 312). That one is quite rusty but all other parts are good and spins nicely. I picked this package up for $600 Canadian (around $450.00 US). Didn't need them but they were just a couple of miles up the road. Cleat Edited June 15, 2018 by cleat 12
Jrblanke 875 #2 Posted June 15, 2018 I'm digging the 312! Handy little tractor!
Sparky-(Admin) 21,567 #3 Posted June 15, 2018 Good score! I bet the key was left on in the 520 and it accumulated a bunch of hours that way
lynnmor 7,411 #4 Posted June 15, 2018 I think you will find that only the 42” rear discharge will fit the 520H, the side discharge does not.
cleat 6,737 #5 Posted June 15, 2018 Yep, you are correct, unless you have a 88 or 89 with the smaller tires (I have one of those but still no interest in a 42" deck on a 20HP machine).

cleat 6,737 #7 Posted July 20, 2018 Here is where I stand now. 312 has been completely gone through and any loose bearings, bushings etc have been replaced. All fluids changed and all grease fittings greased. One front tire needed a tube and that is complete. Wire harness has been completely gone through and is now perfect. It runs perfectly. 42" mower deck is over at my neighbors for a weld. All brackets have been cleaned up and painted, and spindles have been cleaned up painted and new bearings installed. This is how it looks now. It could use a paint job but I will likely sell it like this. I will keep the 520 as I seem to have a real attachment to those. 520 has been completely taken apart, painted and I am now reassembling with all new bushings as required to tighten things back up. This was a very high hour unit but besides normal wear and tear it seems in good shape. This is how it looks as of first thing this morning. I will keep you posted as it comes back to a useful life. oneroadkingman 53 #8 Posted July 20, 2018 Wow that's looking good Cleat. you don't waste no time do you. how do you get the parking brake lever off on a 520 there's a lever on the outside of the panel on left side, and it looks like a drift pin is in there I know I got to get the drift pin out it's been soaking for a while any other suggestions I guess drill it out maybe I got to get that sides laid off there's a broken bolt for the gas tank bracket thanks cleat. cleat 6,737 #9 Posted July 20, 2018 It is just a very small roll pin. I just use a pin pinch and knock it out. All of mine have been converted to the old style to get rid of that pesky knob. Drilling it might work if you had a very high quality drill bit. Roll pins are made of spring steel and are very difficult to drill.
muz123 1,192 #10 Posted July 21, 2018 Those 312H's are the best wheel horses ever made! 12hp Kohler and eaton 1100 transmission can't beat! Great find!
DoctorHfuhruhurr 137 #11 Posted July 22, 2018 Nice bargain haul. It would consider that a deal even at twice what you paid for it.
cleat 6,737 #12 Posted July 31, 2018 (edited) Little more progress today. Front end is complete. Tires are mounted and installed. I will get a pic of that tomorrow. Rear fender is installed even though it will eventually get pulled and painted. Sharp eyes will notice the old style motion lever. I like that better but the main reason is for the easier install of Matt's kit. That reminds me, I need to order that. I also converted the parking brake to the older style as I like that better too. cleat 6,737 #13 Posted July 31, 2018 This is how it looks now. Next will be to move onto the engine. Cleat
cleat 6,737 #14 Posted August 3, 2018 Started on the engine today. Checked compression before disassembly 130 PSI on both cylinders. Everything went well until one exhaust bolt broke off (Darn). Made up a steel plate and bolted it to the intake port and sat on my magnetic drill. Filed top of bolt flat and center punched as close as possible. Drilled and tapped hole. Fitted muffler temporarily (yay it fits). Pulled flywheel, cleaned and reinstalled. Pulled heads, not much carbon to speak of. Set valves.
WHX?? 49,533 #15 Posted August 3, 2018 Just chiming in to follow and say nice work Cleat. Amazing what a little elbow grease will do
cleat 6,737 #16 Posted August 6, 2018 Heads are back on, air duct tin work has been painted and installed. Flywheel screen painted and installed. Fuel pump reinstalled with new vacuum line. Carb and intake cleaned and installed. Ignition coil and voltage regulator installed. Muffler has been bead blasted and painted. Is currently hanging in the sun. It looked rusty to begin with but cleaned up nice with no holes or cracks and all heat shield mounting tabs are intact. Cleat 1
cleat 6,737 #17 Posted August 8, 2018 Engine installed today. Intake torqued down and muffler installed. PTO all hooked up. New vacuum line installed. Cables hooked up. Governor linkage hooked up. Belt installed. Fuel line to pump installed. 9 pin connected (all new and sealed). Battery cables installed (might install new ends at battery side). New condenser installed. Oil has been drained and new filter installed, no oil yet. New 'O' ring on dipstick as original was deformed and I could hear it hiss when engine was rolled over by hand.
cleat 6,737 #18 Posted August 10, 2018 Did a quick compression test and is now 125 on both cyl. Down a little from before the cleanup (was 130) but that is likely from removal of carbon and/or slightly thicker head gaskets. Exhaust heat shields installed, oil filled, spark plugs installed. I broke coil removing it and my spare is no good either so I am now waiting on a new one. If I get real excited about starting it I can take a coil from another 520 but I will likely just wait.
cleat 6,737 #19 Posted August 14, 2018 (edited) New coil installed and she runs. Machine is now all done except for painting the rear wheels, and pulling the hood & fender for paint at a later date. Matt's foot control will be added later as well. Cleat Edited August 14, 2018 by cleat 4

oneroadkingman 53 #23 Posted August 22, 2018 Hey quick can I get a better shot of the rear end of your tractor is that a hitch on the back I'd like to see the whole thing thanks I'd like to try to do that with mine
cleat 6,737 #24 Posted August 22, 2018 I buffed out the hood and I think it is salvageable. Rear fender is not, it will need paint. Here are the plans for the rear hitch Wheel Horse heavy duty rear hitch plans.pdf Rear hitch plate.pdf Here is a picture of one I made up with the small receiver. Here is a hitch mounted on another 520. I love this hitch and have one on most of my tractors. Cleat

All paintwork on this machine has been done with spray cans (frame was brush painted by my 12 year old daughter, Bailey). For the hood and rear fender on the other machines, they have been spray painted by my neighbor who also paints cars on the side. Cleat
