My Honey's 657 Repaint & refresh

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

Other than a little more scraping on the engine block we are done removing old paint.

WOO-HOO !!!

Ordered a full sticker set from @Vinylguy and some more parts from @A-Z Tractor.

We both spent some time today scraping and wire brushing and then Trina did a little bit of priming and painting.

We ended the work session by bolting a couple things together!

Looking good. The paint you are using for high heat is good stuff as long as you follow the directions for heating it up. I have it on three stacks and for about 3 years now and so far good.

Thanks Jay!

I'll double check the can but I don't recall seeing any special heat instructions like on others....

I was prepared to oven bake it but it didn't say to do so.

Very true, yes.

It'll be put to work on our acreage towing stuff around.

Wood mostly.

Stone, rocks, gravel, etc too.....

Moving the splitter around.

My bigger Tractors will do the same thing but with more weight.

This evening I spent an hour or two trying to clean the fins out on the engine and scrape down the block a bit.

Trina spent about the same amount of time or even a little more finishing up wire brushing both rear wheels. Then we put a coat of primer on them.

No sir. Me either. Or my honey. Her choice was almond as well. They are actually almond as of now. Pictures forthcoming later.

Engine, rims, seat. All matching.

No worries there Bob. French doors headed out of the basement on to the back deck. We installed both...last year.

For the record, the color that we are using for the wheels, engine and seat is Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra cover Navajo White.

Rear wheels.

The new front tires arrived in the mail today. Here's one for comparison next to one of the original :wh: front tires.

We put the engine on its bracket and mounted it to the frame last night.

Couple minor challenges with a broken bolt and other stuff but oh well.

:)

Installed carb (twice because I forgot to attach linkage the first time...) and breather, too.

Would have done more but sometime in the past one of the nutserts broke away from the fan shroud so we reattached that and left it to dry.

We might be kind of excited.

:D

Trina picked up a HF manual tire changer yesterday and we're trying that out this morning.

I'm really looking forward to fiddling with it and understanding how it works.

I'll dismount and mount some old tires first then the 657 rears...

Hoping for final assembly this weekend !!!

My show tractors for October Festivals.
RJ59, 1045, 657 w/sickle bar, 10HP and D200. Just love the attention and hearing the stories of grandpa or growing up had one. Always can see the joy these Horses bring to the spectators. Than telling them the WH history story along with Speedex story always intrigues them.
Than of course there is always someone that needs to get one out of the way.
Last year it was the 1045 and the PO was so excited to learn I got her running and been mowing my grass all summer. Of course I had to let him drive her around.
      This year it’s a 702 I think I getting this week.
So many were engrossed by the Sickle Bar never knowing such was available on garden tractors.

If you read the restoration thread you'll see that one of my recent posts involves me snapping off the end of the crankshaft during an attempted repair.
You'll also see about a Briggs & Stratton engine  I'm going to use.

What I'm looking for in this thread is if anyone has ever put an older style Briggs & Stratton in place of a Tecumseh or even a Kohler....

What are the things I need to watch for?

I'm accustomed to using Non detergent oil in all older small engines.
Thanks to @pfrederi I have the manual for the Tecumseh and it says to use detergent oil BUT it is printed in 1998... Over 30 years after DOM on my engine.

      What do you folks use??

      I've ordered this set

      https://www.redoyourhorse.com/tecumseh-4-pc-engine-decal-set/

from our awesome vendor Terry @Vinylguy.

I know where the balloon sticker goes and the oil sticker.

Where does the large "Solid State" one belong??

      Thanks!!
