My Honey's 657 Repaint & refresh

As stated in another section my honey went and bought herself a 657 a few days ago. Sunday afternoon to be exact.

 

Runs and drives quite well and had a very serious and non negotiable issue.

It's Oliver green with Ford gray wheels.

 

Other than that the work should be minimal standard stuff.

 

Well of course she started tearing right into the disassembling of the lucky little tractor.

We started to show the daily work being done to it and then realized we should really start a new thread in the proper location.

 

So here's a few before pics as a reminder.

After this was taken she found some spray on paint stripper and emptied the can on it.

 

We left it on for 24 hours or so.

 

And found red paint!!

I am glad that we finally saw your honey's face , for awhile I was beginning to think it you in all the pictures wearing a wig .

 She really does nice work , do you load her out for  projects ?

It's amazing what is hiding under those odd paint jobs we come across. Heres some pics for motivation on saving the original paint. This was a 701 I did. Lots of paint stripper and wet sanding.

Just make sure it isn't a short frame or "cute" in any way or you might not get it back....

Oliver green and Ford gray wheels wasn't an entirely unlikeable combination.

Paint quality was way way way past amateur. Garbage.

Fortunately for this tractor and all those who want to watch, my honey is one of the most determined and dedicated people I've ever met when it comes to finishing up a project.

 

This tractor is going to look great.

Yes it will. Yes it will.

 

I do have a serious liking and a brand loyalty that I've developed over the last 2 years to .

 

 

........ I do have two other horses. One is the Patriot horse. Obviously red, white, blue.

The other is Cinnamon horse. Reddish brown or brownish red depending on who you are and what kind of day you're having.

Neither one of them is a hundred percent red but at least I'm in the ballpark.

 

If all goes according to plan I'll start working on the 3rd one sometime in July or August. That one will be a nice bright clean clear Wheelhorse red.

She's a country girl. She'll have no problem at all getting that tractor covered with dirt. But she'll also clean it quite well when she's done.

 

But you're right... She very much enjoys helping me work on mine and she's having the time of her life taking this one apart and cleaning it up.

She paid next to nothing for this one and it wouldn't surprise me if another one came along that she took a hold of it.

Status update!!

 

Tore off the engine.

Removed front axle assembly.

Began demudification of transmission internals.

Note the transmission drainage in the last post.

After sitting for 22 hours that pan is almost full.

 

 

Tonight's Leisure Time was spent cleaning up a few pieces. Removing 50 plus years of rust and somebody's poor green paint decision from the past.

Scraped a bit of muck off the frame and started wire brushing

In my rules they would now be good jeans. I tell the better half all the time new jeans are just work clothes I haven't worked in yet. Once they got a couple grease stains they become good jeans to me. Cause they are now good to work in. She don't care for my theory to much and tells me as much as its against my preference, I do need to clean up and be presentable every now and then. But the tractor is looking good so far.

That sounds about what my honey thinks too.

We actually almost Never wear denim. Neither one of us owns much cotton because of all the hiking we do. She had those on for protection from flying debris.

My wife isn’t a fan of heavy grease stains or smells. So—I use a pair of “good” jeans until it is to worn to look decent for use around town, then I use them for construction for a few months, if there is any life left after that, they become my shop jeans. These hang in the garage cause Kelli doesn’t like the smell in the house.  Keeps me from wrecking multiple pairs of pants.  I guess I’m a grease monkey when I’m in them—right where I like to be!

That is awesome that she gets in there and just goes at it. Good for her! Hope my wife takes interest in the one she wants when I start it. Doubt it. But seeing her on it with a smile will make it worth it. Besides if it’s her tractor, I can’t get in trouble for working on it. 😁

More disassembling and cleaning.

 

Real live  tires!!!

 

 

This hub was a little loose and the seal had been leaking for a looooong time so it came off with near zero effort.

Same for the input pulley.

The other hub I'm gonna set up one of the 5 bolt pullers using another hub.

Tried tonight but my bolts were a bit short.

Nooo... Not this year. Just plain way too busy here around the acreage.

 

Boy I'll tell you all.... This tractor of hers needs nearly Nothing.

Simple maintenance parts and fluids.

It's in fantastic mechanical condition!!

She did.

Very good find.

There's a brass bushing in the steering near the front that shows almost No wear.

All the fittings were full of grease. Every single bolt has come undone without serious resistance.

Now that other hub though... We'll see....

No new pics from yesterday but I did get a couple seals out of the transmission.

Trina (aka my honey) spent some time wire brushing and chemical cleaning more nasty green paint off various parts before taking a "break" to clear brush and put brakes on her mom's car.

 

I'll post some pics in a bit.

Today I spent quite a bit of time working on the transmission. Got a lot more paint off of it. Removed the shifter. Dog Point screw looks great. Wire brushed up a bunch of nuts and bolts that attach to it. Got the brake pulley off. Then...

 

I set up the five Bolt hub removal tool.

 

 

Heat it. Oil it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

 

Tighten up the bolts a little.

 

Heat it. Oil it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

 

Tighten up the bolts a little.

Just kept at it for about 3 1/2 hours between other things.

 

Quite a few times I was leaning down on that 25 in breaker bar hard enough that it was lifting the whole of the transmission.

 

That thing fought me tooth and nail and every other way to do it all the way out to the very end of the Hub shaft.

 

In the end.... I WON !!!!!
