WHX??

Title typo aside this thread should be pinned Dick. :thanks: The only one I see missing is the one for the 70 amp solenoidless three term switch. Also if you have the cigar lighter that can be wired off the lighting point.

Fixed it, thanks.

These tend to be some of the frequently asked questions that can't be answered by referring folks to the wiring diagram in the manuals.

WHX??

We should point out that gen terminal is located on the underside of the regulator just to the left of the resistor. Green wire in the first pic. This particular tractor was converted to a late style 5 post switch and solenoid  but the gen wire is still required.

Make sure SG posts are clean and use star washers here. This one came loose and gen light did come on. The third  wire on the armature post is going to the light.

MAKE SURE the reg mounting bracket is securely grounded, scrape paint and/or star washers as required. Some regs are mounted on rubber vibration  mounts but had a small ground strap, pay attention to that, fourth pic. Pics were off an old crusty one on the shelf so please excuse. The three side terminals should be mounted towards the gas tank on most models. This was off a 1055 where the three terminals were mounted on a bracket exclusive to short frame big blocks toward the engine.. Things got a little tight. Correct me if I'm wrong Richard.

This service builtin was brought to our attention by @Anglo Traction :handgestures-thumbupright: and has a wealth of information about ignition switches from the late '70s and early '80s. This was a period of transition to and from battery powered ignition systems. If you need to know what switch will work for your application this is a great place to look.      #134.

I know this post is 6 months mature now but I wanted to thank @953 nut for taking the time to set it up in the first place and then add/edit as needed/requested by @WHX21 in post #5.

I used the 3 terminal ignition switch diagram, for the 867.

I'll be adding 2 fuses to the circuits.

this is an often overlooked part of restoring tractors.  keep in mind these machines are 30 to 50 years old now.  a full rewire with new fresh copper makes a huge difference in the performance of your tractor and is well worth the time and investment

We've done all 5 tractors now.

Every wire on all but a couple of short ones on the 2 '67s from VR to battery or field....  And those looked excellent or would have been replaced as well.

I'm thinking it'll stay a part of our standard tractor repairs to a new herd member.

I did a lot of research on my C160 when I was bringing it back to life and over the years I accumulated a lot of information on it. I really like working with electric and redid some diagrams for it.

so I would like to share with all those that have trouble with it. I know these work because this is working on my C160 to this day.

The diagrams above are for the original wiring and for a relay to run bigger lights ( blue wires)or any thing up to 15 amps, any more then 15 amps could cook your regulator.

This is mainly for the 1974-1979 B & C series tractors, B80, B100, C100, C120, C140, C160.

PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU ORDER YOUR PARTS. THIS IS A START FOR THOSE THAT DONT HAVE A

Here is a copy of the wiring system for your tractor. The wiring diagrams I posted are rather general and are intended to help understatnd how the electrical systems work.

Eric....this thread is in the "Instructional Threads / Electrical"  in the Reference Section.  It's pretty much either one or the other...pinning every good helpful thread defeats the purpose of having the reference section.  Also not every thread that is pinned is a helpful thread.  :eusa-think:

Okay cool. Thank you sir. I was fairly sure it was pinned somewhere I just couldn't figure out where. I'll try to remember that for next time.

It's kind of a toss up.  Some years ago (4-5), we had about 5 places where these special threads were put.  We changed all that into the Reference Section and went through all the other places and either got rid of threads that should not have been there, or moved the threads to build that Reference Section.  There is a couple of sections on the main page that have so many threads pinned, that when you open that section, you almost have to go to the second page to see what is going on.  "Transmissions" is one of those...actually I should move some of those threads to the reference section and maybe pin them there.  There is also a number of threads in the regular pages that should be in the Reference Section.  Not long ago, I moved Aldon's GT-14 thread into the Reference Section / Restorations.

One other issue with the Reference Section, I think a lot of members don't realize that section is there.  It is to make those special threads easier to find when you need them.  Not to ramble on here, but know that when a search is done, the soft ware looks in the Reference Section also.  :occasion-xmas:   @ebinmaine

As long as we are talking about electrical, how about a recomendation of quality wire to use to rewire our old tractors. Seems like kinda of a crap shoot on quality these days with electrical parts. Thanks!

I try as hard as I can to buy wire that is 100% copper. I don't know if there is any merit to it but I have read that the CCA or Copper Clad Aluminum can have a tendency to corrode due to the rules of dissimilar metals.

Maybe 3 years ago now? I bought a 50-foot spool of full copper 7 conductor trailer wire.

That gives me the option of cutting the outside sheath off and using seven individual wires or leaving it on where I might want it to run through something like the gas tank shelf.

I don't do restorations. We build workers. So the actual color of the wire is less important to me than it is to some.

Hello Everyone, my name's Dan and I'm a wrenchaholic.

      Um, sorry.
      That's Thursday nights meeting.

First, thank you to all you old farts out there like myself and don't get me wrong. There are many young, Old Farts in this world also.
I think of anyone that sees beauty deep inside an old tractor, samurai sword, and yes, even a lovely lady could qualify also.
If you're the type of person that has the patients and other qualities that's needed to bring beauty and life back to something others see as old junk, or past it's prime, you're my kind of person.

      To the point now.
I ran across a 1980ish Argo 8x8 Amphibious vehical for the right price the other day, FREE, and of course it has the infamous Starter/Generator system. Also, it's had many unqualified druggies, and electrical experts, work on it before me.  I'm retired union electrician and fiber optic engineer so I was once qualified but,. But,. But, what was I talking bout?
      You get my point.
So, I was wondering if anyone could possibly point me in the direction of a midg,,,,,,. Wait,. Little Person, preferably a female and  blonde, so I won't have to do so much bending over working on this darn thing and while you're at it, maybe a wiring diagram for a complete starter/generator including a three wire voltage regulator?

If you have information on either of these, the help would be most appreciated.
Really, she doesn't even have to be blonde or little.

That ought to show you just how willing I am to work with others.

Thank all of you here for sharing your wisdom so it can be handed down for others to learn.

I’m new to this and not sure if I’m doing this right, But I have a 211-4 with a Briggs 11hp and the thing was sold in my town years ago when it was new. it was my grandfathers till now so it’s a nice piece of history. and it has some electrical problems I can’t figure out, It blows the 15Amp fuse as soon as you turn the key, it all started after the I had to replace the the ignition switch. And now it just blows the fuse. I messed with it when it happened but I have been away in the service for about two years, but now I’m on leave and want to fix my pride and joy but don’t know if my wires are all in the right spot. And my brother actually hooked the battery up backwards by accident for a few seconds while I was away so don’t know if that did anything. So any helpful suggestions or pictures for an example to look at. Thanks

I have been into garden tractors for a few years.  Wanted to learn about small engines and buying an old sear suburban was cheaper than the class at the local community college.  Just got a 1980 C85 (with a johnny bucket on it).
