WHNJ701 4,165 #1 Posted May 23, 2018 (edited) it's finally ago, finished some major house work over the last few months, the rental property is rented and now I can get back to the fun stuff... awhile ago I picked up this pair, I posted before, I have decided after seeing others on here the 701 is getting a patina restoration. this is new to me, normally I tear down and paint. what are some tips, red scotch pad and Johnsons paste wax, or clear coat? I am going to keep this as the running thread for the pair. Edited May 23, 2018 by jabelman

AMC RULES 37,141 #3 Posted May 23, 2018 Here's one of my paste wax specials.
WHNJ701 4,165 #4 Posted May 25, 2018 I started messing with it tonight, even found an old can Johnson paste wax I tucked away. I am loving the look, something completely different than what I used to doing. one reason I picked this way was that all the original stickers are in place, does anyone know what sticker was under the shift pattern. I have 4 day weekend hope to make some progress on it. 2
AMC RULES 37,141 #5 Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) Most probably it's original dealership decal. Think I'd start with a good scrubbing, then a liberal application of Mothers mag & aluminum polish. Then, finish with the Johnson's. Maybe test on a small, inconspicuous area first, see how you like it. Edited May 25, 2018 by AMC RULES
WHNJ701 4,165 #6 Posted May 25, 2018 that's funny you mentioned I found a can of that with the paste wax I had. will try it. I do think I am going to spray the rims, I used and almond white on a simplicity 700 I restored (and sold) or maybe a satin black and white letter the tires. Chris G 3,296 #7 Posted May 25, 2018 The decal your missing would have said ( Depress Clutch when Starting ) Also it looks pretty good so far.I am a firm believer of saving the patina! Can't wait to see it some more pics.

They don't Richard I think it was just a 1961 version of all those warning stickers we see nowadays. Anybody ever hit the switch on these old girls while the tractor was still in gear?!? Amazing how easy some of these Kohlers start! Couple of other guys @prondzy and @dells68 preserved the patina by some sanding, polish and clear coat. 12 hours ago, AMC RULES said: Maybe test on a small, inconspicuous area first, see how you like it. AMC RULES 37,141 #11 Posted May 25, 2018 Never knew safety was a consideration in 1961. Can anyone post here... an example of what that decal looked like originally?
WHNJ701 4,165 #12 Posted May 26, 2018 (edited) it's amazing what you can get done when your off from work, pulled it out this morning. gave it a good wash and scrubbing. made a trip to the mower shop picked up a set of points and condenser and other parts, that's tomorrow get it running. got the old rotted muffler off, easiest way cut a line with the dremel cut off when give it whack with the screw driver off it pops off. so it's all washed, started rubbing in the wax! Chris G 3,296 #20 Posted May 26, 2018 @953 nut LOL I agree kinda confusing, being there's no clutch switch. I only knew that was the decal cause the 701 I had and the 551 I had both had that decal on them and the 701 was 100% original.

squonk 41,648 #22 Posted May 26, 2018 They didn't want you to start the tractor in gear and not sitting on the tractor. It would take off and run over your wife sitting in a lawn chair reading Good Housekeeping and drinking her highball!
AMC RULES 37,141 #23 Posted May 26, 2018 Just sayin'... I've got three original '61's here, none have that decal. Only '61 safety decal in my collection, I applied it.
WHNJ701 4,165 #24 Posted May 26, 2018 (edited) is that decal available? never mind saw it's in the sticker kit Edited May 26, 2018 by jabelman
Chris G 3,296 #25 Posted May 26, 2018 The decal is available. Check out Redoyourhorse.Com or vinyl guy in the vendors section of the forum. And as far as a picture goes, I will dig one out when I get back from vacation. The tractor now resides in Nebraska with a new owner.
