SylvanLakeWH 25,490 #10 Posted April 28, 2018 Very cool! Just curious - new ship with rust already? Not a salt water steel ship guy but seems odd...?
WHX?? 48,762 #11 Posted April 28, 2018 Not odd at all Sylvan....except for yer double posting That salt spray is so corrosive it's unbelievable. Hence the experimental with aluminum warships at one time. Thanks for those links AMC.....At first I thought it was a CVAN and then wondering why that would have been in Sparkeye's neck of the woods. My how things have changed!

Actually it's not in my neck of the woods at all. My job has me working at Pearl Harbor Hawaii for a few weeks (where these pics were taken). 1

GREYGHOST 65 #14 Posted April 28, 2018 (edited) By no means a New Ship. USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 commissioned in 1998. Amphibious Assault Ship that hauls an MEU around the the Far East looking and protecting our interests. Was lucky enough to spend a few months on board. She used to be home ported in Sasebo, Japan. Pretty nice home port. Edited April 28, 2018 by GREYGHOST

Hence the experimental with aluminum warships at one time. When I was in the NAVY part of my time was spent on Wooden ships and some time on Aluminum ships, They were mine sweepers! Magnetic mines are not attracted to them. Aluminum is subject to the corrosive effects of salt spray too, and is more difficult to repair. The new "Independence Class" of ships is being developed with an Aluminum Trimaran Hull, The biggest drawback to the Aluminum as apposed to traditional Steel construction is its vulnerability to damage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence-class_littoral_combat_ship Corrosion management[edit] After the lead ship of the class suffered from aggressive disintegration due to galvanic corrosion, Austal has made changes to the remaining ships in the class. Coronado will have "new anti-corrosion surface treatments", and Jackson will have "an array of tested corrosion-management tools and processes"
